Thursday Thirteen 166: Fresh From the Garden

One of the benefits of where I work is that we have a garden. Not a lot in it that I like, but it's nice that I can help myself to whatever is growing. Tomatoes and zucchini have been especially plentiful this year. Here are thirteen photos I've taken over the past month. Enjoy!

Zucchini bud

You can see three of the zucchini growing on this one plant!
Click here for an easy and delicious recipe.

Cucumbers

Eggplant blossoms.

Small eggplant. Yes, small. You should see them now!

Acorn squash, not quite ripe yet, but getting there. Mmm...

Green pepper blossom.

Green peppers, still glistening with the morning rain.

Green bean blossoms.

Mmm...yummy green beans. I pick a ton of these every week, and have been eating a lot of them the last month. As long as you pick them regularly, when they are about 6-8 inches long, you will have beans into September. Hope I don't get tired of them before then!

Jungle of tomatoes. If you look closely, you can see how storms have knocked over the heavy metal stakes and plants alike. The vines are so heavy with fruit we can't seem to tie them up off the ground.

Cherry tomatoes.

  1. Oh, num! I love fresh produce from the garden. And I can't imagine having a garden at work. How cool is that? I live in an apartment without a balcony or patio, so the best I can do is the farmer's market. :(

  2. Maddy: Like you, I don't have a patio or balcony either, so it's nice to have access to a garden with at least a few things I like (beans and squash). For other veggies, there is the Farmer's Market...when I actually get to it.

  3. I hope at some point we'll have a garden. Right now I'm murdering the plants.

  4. They all look fabulous, but those green peppers...I want to reach in and pick them!

  5. Journeywoman: Poor plants! LOL I hope you have a real garden some day!

Jennifer: *Grin* That's one of the best compliments a photographer (especially an amateur like myself) can receive. Thank you!

  6. Your green peppers are making me hungry!

  7. Bratty: ROFL... Since the peppers are one of the veggies I don't like, you and Jennifer are welcome to them! ;)

  8. That looks like a very productive garden. I can't wait for our garden to get going again. It's sort of in between crops at present.

  9. Wow. How cool. I love fresh from the garden veggies. I'll have to come visit you. :)

  10. OMG that's a lovely garden! That's one cool workplace you have. The green beans and green peppers look delicious!

  11. Cucumbers seem to grow overnight! I have never grown eggplant but have the rest. I smile more when I garden.

  12. My garden was such a dud this year. Thank goodness for farmer's markets!

    Have a great Thursday!

  13. Great before and after! That's really neat.

  14. The green bean blossoms are so delicate and pretty!

I've been getting lots of cherry tomatoes off my plants on my balcony this summer ... delish!

  15. Very cool to see the flowers that go along with the veggies!

  16. We call those green beans, kentucky beans here in our part of the globe :) (southeast asia)

  17. Hey, send me some of them green t'maters. I got the urge to fry 'em up. :-D

But seriously, it all looks so YUMMY. And the blooms are all so PRETTY. Why didn't I know that veggies had such pretty blooms? LOL

  18. Shelley: It is indeed quite productive this year. Last year there was a tomato blight, so there were none of those, and the other plants didn't produce near as well as they are this year, either. They've had me bring stuff home for my neighbors so it doesn't go to waste!

Brenda: Come on over! It's only a bit over an hour drive, right? *VBG*

Tatiana: Thank you. I've been eating beans a lot lately. I want to suggest broccoli for next year. *g*

    ReplyDelete
  19. Colleen: Both the cucumbers and zucchini seem to grow overnight. We have to keep a close eye on both so they don't get too big!

Harriet: So sorry your garden was not a success this year. It's great you have a farmer's market, though. Not enough communities do.

Darla: Thank you, I was hoping people would like that. *g*

  20. Janet: Aren't the green bean blossoms gorgeous? You are so lucky to have a balcony you can grow stuff on. I would love to do some container gardening!

Paige:Thank you. I think the blossoms alone make some of the plants worthwhile.

Hazel: Kentucky beans...how interesting! Thanks for stopping by and sharing that. :)

Jana: LOL...I'm affraid they would all have turned or would be mush by the time they got to you. You probably didn't know veggies had blossoms because you don't grow them. Unfortunately, gardens have to be weeded, which is something I know you don't do. *WEG*

  21. I want to come work with you. yummy!

I raided my SIL's garden last weekend and came home with tomatoes, cukes, bell peppers and jalapenos. she had squash and zucchini, but we didn't bring any back. She'd already picked over and canned most of the green beans, and the watermelons are a little young, and the pumpkins are barely started.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Elise: Thanks! At least you were able to raid your SIL's garden. I'm glad they decided to put in green beans this year out at work so there's something I like other than squash--though I'm starting to get tired of zucchini, and the acorn won't be ready for a while yet. Sigh... *g*

  23. Yum, if those your tomatoes are on the ground your garden look great. I love the blossoms of the peas and the egg plant, so pretty.

My tomatoes are hardly putting on anything, but leaves. *sulk*

    Happy TT.

  24. Thanks, Janice! We had no tomoatoes last year do to a potato and tomato blight, but that is definitely not an issue this year. I think they're making up for last summer, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Love your garden pictures! Our garden has gone crazy as always, producing more cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, green beans, cabbage, onions and potatoes than I know what to do with! The tomatoes feel so slow this year, but I know we'll be hit with them any moment now...

    Great idea for a TT!

  26. It's so nice that you have access to such a great garden. I love that your pictures were of the blossoms and then the "fruit" of the plants.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There's a lot in the garden that I would like. In fact, just about all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Fresh produce is the best! I think tomatoes are the best example of how different store bought and home grown can taste.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sherilee: Thank you. Sounds like your garden is as overgrown as ours is!

Kristen: Thanks, I really liked how the blossoms and resulting produce turned out, too.

Alice: I think most people like more of what we have growing here than I do. Which is why I want to push for broccoli next year. They'd probably balk at Brussels sprouts. Sigh.

Jill: Fresh is definitely best! I'm glad so many more communities are starting to plant community gardens or sponsor farmers' markets for those without space to grow their own.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah, I'd be one to balk at Brussels sprouts. I'm sure I'm not alone.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mmmmmm... Yummy yummy!

I asked if they had ever tried broccoli out there before, and I could tell by the way Thing 1 said no that he is already thinking about it for next year. Hehehe...

  32. Desi! It's good to hear from you again. Have been thinking of you with all the flooding and such over in Pakistan. Glad to see you're doing okay!
