Thursday Thirteen 280: Recently Read

I got off to a slow start this year, and am still three to four books behind my goal, depending on what day it is.  Here is a look at what I have read so far this year. As always, click on any cover to find out more about a book.

BOOK NOTES:

* Mrs. Dalloway and Northanger Abbey were group reads for TNBBC at GoodReads, for January and February respectively. Mrs. Dalloway was a bit difficult to get into and has also been selected as the March group read for Classics for Beginners. Northanger Abbey was actually a reread, and I enjoyed it even more this second time through than I did in college.

* The Elegance of the Hedgehog was also a TNBBC group read. Liked this one, though the ending made me rather sniffly. Not a fast read, and sometimes rather philosophical, but well-worth the time.

* Elizabeth Peters was the January featured author for the Cozy Mystery group at GoodReads. Liked both of these. Crocodile was first in the Amelia Peabody series, and I hope to read more of those.

* Over Key West was actually purchased as a gift for a friend, but naturally I had to check it out before wrapping it. Great picture/coffee table book for those who enjoy that sort of thing. Spectacular photos!

  1. Nice selection. I've read the wine mystery one. Hubby and I visited the Keys at the end of last year. It's a pretty area.

  2. Of your list, I've only read the JA. Looks like I have a few more to add to my wish list.

  4. I love to see what book title people come up with, like children's names, which I also pay attention to.

  5. At some point, I'll cave and read The Elegance of the Hedgehog. People keep telling me it's good...

    Happy TT to you! :)

  7. I've been meaning to read Northanger Abby for years. I love Jane Austen, I just never get around to picking up a copy.

  8. Shelley: The Keys look like an area I would like. I look forward to (someday) visiting friends there.

  9. Anthony: My reading always tends to vary. Yesterday I finished a cozy mystery, today I'm reading YA. It keeps you from getting bored and broadens your horizons. *g*

  10. Vanessa: It was nice revisiting JA's world. There is really only one book of hers I didn't like as well as the others.

  11. Thanks, Mia! It seems we have a few authors in common. (And thank you for the compliment.)

  12. Colleen: Book titles can certainly be interesting and entertaining. And then there are those that have you wondering what the author or editor was thinking, lol.

  13. Hi Kimberly! "Elegance" was good, but not a fast or light read. Definitely makes you think!

  14. looks like you're still packing them away into the head.

my comment didn't go. ah, I typed the not-a-robot code into the comment box. let's (royal us) try that again.

  15. BeyondWandering: Thank you. I'd feel better about this year's reading goal if I weren't consistently three or four books behind. Need to read a few shorter, faster reads to catch up! :)

  16. Alice: Northanger Abbey was the second book I ever read by Austen. All but one were read on my own, outside of school. Of course rereading this had me digging out all of my JA movies--I'm still working my way through them. *G*

  17. Pearl: Always! I am never without a book of some sort...have always been a voracious reader, though some years have been far leaner than others.

  19. Those are some tough reads in there. Elegance is a hard one, and so is Mrs. Dalloway. Also I find Elizabeth Peters to be a slog sometimes, though it depends on the book.

  20. Paige: LOL...I've no doubt you are. *g*

  21. Anita: And now you know why I am a bit behind in my reading goal--and why I've picked up something shorter, faster and more enjoyable right now.

  23. I love Crocodile On The Sandbank, but was less thrilled with Love Talker. The others are some I've considered. I do love when you post the books you're reading/you've read.

  24. Hi Jennifer! There were a couple things I disliked about The Love Talker, but for the most part I thought it was a good mystery. Thanks for checking out my recent reads!

  27. Stephanie: Agree, Julie Miller is indeed quite awesome. *g*

  28. Hazel: I really wanted to read Mrs Dalloway, so was happy it was voted as a group read in two different groups, but it is not easy reading.
