Thursday Thirteen 281: Bookmarks
One of my peeves is people who dog-ear pages of books. If you don't have a real bookmark, and especially if you borrow one of mine, at least use a receipt or an envelope or napkin—anything to avoid damaging those pages. Here are thirteen bookmarks I own.
1-3: The first two were gifts from friends, but I may have bought the "Don't Quit" one myself. I've had it so long I don't remember.
4-6: The first was a gift from a college friend following sorority initiation. She'd probably be both pleased and surprised to know I still have it. The second was a gift, and the third I bought myself—as you can tell, it has been well-used.
7-9: The first two were found inside books bought at the used book store. The last was a gift from my sorority Big Sis and is also well-used.
10-12: The hand-sewn one was found inside a book from the used book store. I have no recollection where the second one came from—didn't even know I had it. My sister brought the surf board back from a trip to Hawaii.
13: One of the few bookmarks I have purchased for myself—I liked the sentiment.
I mostly use scrap paper for bookmarks but I still mark the best parts with highlighter or pen or pencil if I am being extra careful.

ReplyDeleteI used to dog-ear but now I just place a piece of paper in my page. I've never got round to bookmarks, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteI'm a reformed page turner. If I'm reading a paper book, I use one of the many author bookmarks I've collected over the years.
ReplyDeleteI have been known on occasion to crease a page, but I don't do it often. I took some heavy cardboard and cut it into strips and use it for bookmarks. Now I make notes of pages on the bookmark. I leave the bookmarks in the books. I did have a pile of them but now I'm down to just a few. I need to make another set.

ReplyDeleteI have a handful of bookmarks, but they seldom mark my spot in books. LOL! My favorite is one I've had for years, which says:

When I did that, my dreams began to come true.
Seems Thoreau was on to something, eh?
My other favorite bookmark I bought for my husband, who has a habit of falling asleep while he reads. It has a picture of a cat on it, and says "Qui mi addormentai."
You guessed it: "Here I fell asleep"!

Colleen" I will occasionally mark passages I like or words to look up in pencil. The only books in which I ever used highlighters were college textbooks.

ReplyDeleteShelley: I've collected my share amount of author bookmarks, too, but think most of them are with the stuff waiting to be scarpbooked.
ReplyDeleteAnita: That's a good idea, too -- especially for books one is most likely to make notes on, or if you are reading to write reviews.
ReplyDeleteSandyland: Bookmarks do sometimes disappear--I know I've lost some over the years, or had to get rid of them because they were falling apart--but to lose a book...that is the worst. Even worse is to lose a book loaned to you (thankfully that only happened once).
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janet! I like the surfboard, but the dangly thing tends to get in the way, or get caught on things, so I have not used it much.
ReplyDeleteKimberly: I like your Thoreau bookmark. I used to have one with the Einstein quote, "Imagination is greater than knowledge" (HS class motto), but not sure what happened to it. Probably in my senior scrapbook. And, you will note I have a Maxine bookmark with the same sentiment as the one you gave your husband. *G*

Pearl: I have used the odd receipt or envelope, but never other books or an ipod, as they can ruin the covers or spine.
ReplyDeleteMia Celeste: You would be correct: I don't much care for cracked spines, either--mostly because that's how pages or covers tend to be lost.
ReplyDeleteI confess that in my much younger days (kid/teen)) I dog-eared books like a maniac. As I matured *ahem* I can't stand to dog-ear. I have a collection of bookmarks that used to come with Harlequin orders but if I don't have one handy I've been known to grab whatever piece of paper is handy. Or, as a last resort, lightly drape the open book facedown on the arm of the couch. ;)
ReplyDeleteDogearring the pages of a book is criminal! Hubby's and avid reader and dogeared pages before we met. I put a stop to that and insisted he use a bookmark! LOL!
