Started The Nail Knot by John Galligan, a mystery by a local writer, late Saturday night. I've had this one in Mount TBR several years now, and pulled it out this weekend for a couple reading challenges at Goodreads. To be honest, I've found it a bit difficult getting into the voice of the narrator. Here's a teaser from early on in the book.
I was pushing through a stand of black willow shoots at the water’s edge when I heard what I figured first was a muskrat splashing around its den. In the dark, of course, there is always a separation between what the mind thinks and the body feels, and the sound froze me for a moment, while my pulse galloped.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Driven by tragedy, the Dog is on a quest to fish himself into oblivion—and he's nearly made it. Lumbering across America in a wounded RV, with only the promise of the next trout stream to sustain him, the Dog rolls into Black Earth, Wisconsin. And somehow, his supply of bad cigars and vodka-Tang seem insufficient when faced with a dead body, a sweaty woman, and a mysterious figure that walks on water.

I love the blurb, though I have a hard time imagining murder in Black Earth. And I don't know about you, but I've never been to keen on running across a muskrat.
ReplyDeleteThe description sounds good. Here's Mine
ReplyDeleteAlice: Definitely not keen on meeting a muskrat, especially in the dark. And hey--murder can happen anywhere. They still have an unsolved cold case in the nearby Town of Dane from 1998.
ReplyDeleteHi Paulita ~ Thank you!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely captivating...thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteSounds intriguing. Local authors are great to read, but local author fiction is always a bit of a gamble. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteLaurel-Rain: Thanks, happy to captivate. ☺
ReplyDeleteBook Blather: I like supporting local authors when I can, but you're right--it can be a bit of a gamble. Some are far too "lit fic" or "out there" for me, but I have found a couple I like.
ReplyDeleteWasn't there a case of a 50 year old skeleton found in a chimney in Madison, too?
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting read...kudos for supporting a local author!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Tuesday post: http://www.bookclublibrarian.com/2013/06/first-chapter-first-paragraph-18-and.html
Alice: Yes, there was a body found in a music store chimney in 1989. That one has never been solved, either, and George Hesselberg wrote an update on it in April.
ReplyDeleteRecently, the Town of Madison reopened a cold case from 1986, hoping to solve it before the town is completely annexed into Madison and Fitchburg in 2022, the murder of a student while working at an Open Pantry.
Hi Catherine! This one started out a bit slow, but has gotten more interesting. I am nearly 3/4 done!
ReplyDeleteThe blurb sounds good and the teaser got my pulse pounding. Thanks for visiting my blog. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard about this one before but it really sounds good.
ReplyDeleteKathy M: Thank you, I just finished and have to say--I ended up liking this one more than I thought I would.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard about this one before but it really sounds good.
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne! I'm not surprised you haven't heard of the book or author before. I probably wouldn't have heard of Galligan if he weren't a local author, lol. Thanks for visiting!
ReplyDeleteGreat description! Here is my teaser for this week.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a teaser! Hope the book is getting better for you. Thanks for visiting mine yesterday :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Beth! Will be sure to check yours out. :)
