Teaser Tuesday 180: Breakfast at Tiffany's

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

I spent most of Sunday reading Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote. While I have seen the movie many times, I had never read the novella. It was interesting to see how they differed, particularly the ending. Here's a teaser from early in the story.

I'd been living in the house about a week when I noticed that the mailbox belonging to Apt.2 had a name-slot fitted with a curious card. Printed, rather Cartier-formal, it read: Miss Holiday Golightly; and, underneath, in the corner, Traveling.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

In this seductive, wistful masterpiece, Truman Capote created a woman whose name has entered the American idiom and whose style is a part of the literary landscape. Holly Golightly knows that nothing bad can ever happen to you at Tiffany's; her poignancy, wit, and naïveté continue to charm.

This volume also includes three of Capote's best-known stories, “House of Flowers,” “A Diamond Guitar,” and “A Christmas Memory,” which the Saturday Review called “one of the most moving stories in our language.” It is a tale of two innocents—a small boy and the old woman who is his best friend—whose sweetness contains a hard, sharp kernel of truth.

  1. I like teaser! First saw this a few months ago at a vintage film night: a ton of people turned up dressed like Holly!

I will confess I never saw the movie and haven't read anything by Capote either.

  4. Hi Annie! I wish Vintage film night...sounds like a fun event! And I wish I could pull off a black dress like Holly's. *g*

  5. Kathy: while there are some differences between the book and movie (aren't there always?), the biggest was in the ending, which Paramount completely changed. The same thing was done for Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.

  6. Sullivan McPig: This was my third book by Capote. I really liked this story, and it was a fast read, but highly recommend In Cold Blood.

  7. There's a book? Oh.

Isn't it appropriate that Golightly would be traveling?

  12. Alice: Yes, dear, there's a book. And yes, the name is rather appropriate. Not just the last name, but the entire name, Holiday Golightly.

  13. Valentina: Capote definitely had his own style!

  14. Laurel-Rain: I've read In Cold Blood a couple times, and had been meaning to read this one for a few years now. Makes me glad I nominated it for a group read and that it won! ☺

  15. Andrea: Both the book and movie are good. I'd really like to see the movie again now, but--though I swear I recorded it off TCM some years ago--I can't seem to find it.

  16. Mei: Yes! If you like the movie, do take the time to read the book. It's short and reads fairly fast. I could have easily finished it in one day but you know how it is--some days you get busy or easily distracted. : )

  22. I've always wondered what this book was about, I guess I should read it. And you should watch Christmas with the Kranks. It is hilarious. Have a nice day.

  23. Andrea: I've always known it was based on the novel--I think it says "based on" at the beginning. Either that or the TCM host mentioned it when introducing the movie.

  24. Kelley: I guess you've never seen the movie then? It is a good read. Still gonna pass on the Kranks, though. I liked the book too much to let the movie ruin it for me. I refuse to watch The Bridges of Madison County for the same reason. The trailer and reviews were enough to tell me I would hate it.
