Teaser Tuesday 201: The Hound of the Baskervilles

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week I am reading a short classic for a Goodreads group read: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Here's a snippet from somewhere in the middle:

We had risen from our rocks and were turning to go home, having abandoned the hopeless chase. The moon was low upon the right, and the jagged pinnacle of a granite tor stood against the lower curve of its silver disc. There, outlined as black as an ebony statue on that shining background, I saw the figure of a man upon the tor.

(Chapter 9)

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Perhaps the most popular of all Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles combines the traditional detective tale with elements of horror. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, the blame is placed on a family curse-and it is up to Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery of the legend. Rationalism is pitted against the supernatural and good against evil, as Sherlock Holmes tries to defeat a foe almost his equal.

He's more lyrical than I expected. i downloaded some Doyle with the intention of improving my grasp on the Sherlock Holmes stuff, but haven't started in on it yet.

I haven't read this book in a long, long time. I think I should read it again.

Mine is from Moon's Artifice

Nice tease!!!

I did enjoy this book a few years back - nothing like spooky dogs and a dark moor for scaring you!

Laurel-Rain: It is very good. I'm nearing the end and can't wait for the denouement.

Heather said...

Vonnie: If you haven't read Doyle before, you're in for a treat!

Yvonne: Thank you! ☺

Alice: He is quite a good writer, actually. His descriptive passages of that dark and dreary moor have me shivering almost as much as this blasted polar vortex.

Hi Sonia! I remember reading scenes from a dramatic interpretation of the book, and thought I had read it, but nothing in this story has been familiar. I have quite enjoyed it.

As to comment moderation, the problem with that is that 1) I don't receive notification of comments waiting to be approved and 2) therefore forget to check for them. I've sometimes had comments on older posts waiting for approval for weeks before I saw they were there.

Thanks, Sally -- it is indeed quite atmospheric.

I like that teaser. Thanks so much for stopping by. How was your Holiday?

Heather said...

Thanks, Kelley -- there was some good imagery in that scene. Holidays were okay, other than coming down with a nasty cold right after Christmas. Still trying to get rid of it. :-\

Good point. I might want to wait until it warms up to tackle it. I'm already doing more than enough shivering.

Tor: a hill or rocky peak.

Yes, I looked it up! Thanks for adding to my vocabulary.

Thanks, Andrea!

Cleopatra: Thanks, I'm glad you are enjoying the audio version. :)

Alice: Nah, no need to wait as long as you can curl up with a warm blanket and/or hot beverage. :D

Gal: Hehe...you're welcome! This book has a lot of great vocabulary words in it. Maybe I'll use some for an upcoming Thursday Thirteen. ☺
