Teaser Tuesday 209: Home for the Homicide

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week I am teasing from a book I've recently finished, Home for the Homicide by Jennie Bentley. I have teased previous books in this series here, here, and here.

The front door opened with that long, drawn-out shriek of rusty hinges familiar from scary movies. I hadn't really noticed it during the day--possibly because the door had been standing open most of the time--but now it sent a chill down my spine.

I put the lid aside and grabbed my cell phone. Got up on my knees to shine the light into the crate.

And screamed.

(Chapter 5)

ABOUT THE BOOK
"Do-It-Yourself" mystery series #7

Avery Baker was a big city textile designer, until she inherited her aunt’s old Maine cottage and found her true calling—home renovation. But she never expected her latest job would come to such a bone-rattling dead end . . .

For Avery and her husband Derek, renovating the Craftsman Bungalow was like stepping back in time. The quaint old home was just as its original owners had left it—from the beautiful butler’s pantry to the surprisingly exquisite ribbon tile. But it’s the attic that yields the most heart-stopping surprise.

In a discreetly hidden antique crate, Avery finds a clue to a decades-old missing persons case. As Avery works on the house and delves deeper into the sinister story, it becomes clear that someone very crafty wants the Craftsman home’s secrets to stay that way!

  6. Thanks, Shelley! And yes, noises of any kind are always scarier at night, especially squeaky doors and banging shingles or shutters.

  13. I've been completely oblivious to a keening wind until everyone else stepped out of the room.

  14. Lucky you. It was so bad a couple weeks ago even the TV and radio couldn't completely obliterate it.

  15. It's going to bug you more. That kind of wind can mean serious trouble in Wisconsin. Around here, not so much.

  16. True. Thankfully, although a few limbs have come down on our block, there are no trees down this year.

  17. I still vividly remember driving past a barn on my way to work. It was brand new. One of those sheering winds came along and scattered it across the highway. Poor farmer.

  18. Funny, isn't it, how the wind can be soothing one day, and pure terror the next.
