Teaser Tuesday 152: The Hobbit

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

I am about to begin a reread of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien as a TNBBC November group read, and in anticipation of the upcoming movie (the first of three) opening December 14. It's been ages since I read this, so I am looking forward to reliving the adventure. Here is the opening paragraph.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo-alone and unaided-who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside . . .

This stirring adventure fantasy begins the tale of the hobbits that was continued by J.R.R. Tolkien in his bestselling epic The Lord of the Rings.

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when it was first published in 1937. Now recognized as a timeless classic, this introduction to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, Gollum, and the spectacular world of Middle-earth recounts of the adventures of a reluctant hero, a powerful and dangerous ring, and the cruel dragon Smaug the Magnificent.

I still haven't read this book, but I love the language in your teaser. I must add it to my list!

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Laurel-Rain: What better time to read it than now, with the movie only a month away? *g*

I've been thinking it was time to re-read this again before the movie comes out haha
Love the teaser.

This is my Teaser Tuesday at Bookmunchies (:

Thanks, Cyn I confess, I was the one who nominated it for TNBBC's classic group read, as I was planning to rered it before December myself. A little extra incentive never hurts. ;-D

My dd started reading it a couple of months ago, but keeps getting distracted by other books. I'm rather disappointed in her.

Alice: *Gasp* She hasn't finished it? Unacceptable!

I just listened to it, I got a killer deal on audible. I wanted to familiarize myself with the details before I see the movie too. I've already bought my tickets!!!! I can't wait!!!!

The Hobbit doesn't really interest me, but maybe one day! Thanks for stopping by.

Like Beth I've never read The Hobbit. Maybe someday....

Sandy: It is a wonderful tale, isn't it?

Nise': I read all of the books back in HS, and was wishing I had reread them when I saw the movies. NOT that that prevented me from enjoying them. *G*

Heather said...

Elizabeth: Me neither--which is why I have been looking forward to rereading it. :)

Brooke: Me too! Did you ever see the animated movie?

Heather said...

Kelley: Why am I not surprised you already have tickets, LOL?

Beth & Gigi Ann: I do hope you will check it out some day. It truly is a wonderful adventure story. Thanks for visiting!

I know! But when I think of it, I read it the first time when I was 13, and had to come back to it a couple of times to get into it. Maybe she just hasn't gotten there yet.

Alice: Maybe...but isn't she about the age we would have read in HS? Any way, maybe if she sees the movie it will inspire her to finish the book.
