I finished off the month of May with a classics group read of The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. This was another re-read for me, having read some of the books in this series as a kid. If you have only seen the movie and never read the book, I encourage you to do so. There are a lot of differences between the two. I remembered some of the events in the book, but there were other chapters that were not at all familiar.
Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer’s wife. Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
First published in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved children's books ever written. When Dorothy and Toto are suddenly swept off the plains of Kansas by a huge cyclone to the land of Oz, they meet up with some of the most endearing characters ever created—the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. Together they set off on a fantastic journey down the yellow brick road in search of the wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Sonia: I have a feeling you're not alone. I think most adults are more familiar with the movie or the book/musical "Wicked" than the original story.
Why haven't I read this book?! Per your suggestion, I'll definitely be reading THE WIZARD OF OZ. Sounds like fun.

I've never read the book and the film annoys me. Obviously I would probably enjoy the book better. Several of my kids have read the book, though. Here is my teaser for this week.
I love this book, when I was younger I fell in love with anything Oz related and this is the classic everyone knows even if they have never read or seen it =)
Ahhhh. That second quote, totally tugged on the heartstrings as I imagined who it was aimed it! I've never actually read this, just seen the Judy Garland movie. Maybe I should!

SparklingMinx: I think it's a classic everyone thinks they know, but many would be surprised at some of the differences between book and film. (For example, the shoes aren't red.)

bookskeepmesane: As mentioned to SparklingMinx above, I think everyone thinks they know the story, and perhaps they are familiar with the gist of it (girl lands in Oz, tries to get back home, meets odd cast of characters), but there is a lot in the book not mentioned in the movie, as well as other changes.
Karen and Gerard: It's kind of difficult NOT knowing the movie, isn't it? And now there is the musical WICKED, which embellishes the story even more.
