I finished off the month of May with a classics group read of The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. This was another re-read for me, having read some of the books in this series as a kid. If you have only seen the movie and never read the book, I encourage you to do so. There are a lot of differences between the two. I remembered some of the events in the book, but there were other chapters that were not at all familiar.
(Opening of Ch 1, The Wizard of Oz)
~*~*~*~*~
The Wizard, on brains:“You don’t need them. You are learning something every day. A baby has brains, but it doesn’t know much. Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth the more experience you are sure to get.”
(Ch 15)
ABOUT THE BOOK:
First published in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved children's books ever written. When Dorothy and Toto are suddenly swept off the plains of Kansas by a huge cyclone to the land of Oz, they meet up with some of the most endearing characters ever created—the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. Together they set off on a fantastic journey down the yellow brick road in search of the wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Other books in the series (in order): The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz,* Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, The Road to Oz, The Emerald City of Oz, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, Tik-Tok of Oz,* The Scarecrow of Oz, Rinkitink in Oz, The Lost Princess of Oz, The Tin Woodman of Oz, The Magic of Oz, and Glinda of Oz.
(* Denotes other books in the series I remember reading.)

You know, I have never actually read this book. But I should.

Sonia: I have a feeling you're not alone. I think most adults are more familiar with the movie or the book/musical "Wicked" than the original story.
Why haven't I read this book?! Per your suggestion, I'll definitely be reading THE WIZARD OF OZ. Sounds like fun.
My Teaser is from THE COMEBACK KISS.
Hi Sandy! I do hope you'll pick it up, and that you enjoy it. I liked reading it both as a child and adult, and think it would be fun to read with a younger generation. I'm passing my copy on to my youngest niece. ☺
I haven't read it either.
I've never read the book and the film annoys me. Obviously I would probably enjoy the book better. Several of my kids have read the book, though. Here is my teaser for this week.
I love this book, when I was younger I fell in love with anything Oz related and this is the classic everyone knows even if they have never read or seen it =)
Ahhhh. That second quote, totally tugged on the heartstrings as I imagined who it was aimed it! I've never actually read this, just seen the Judy Garland movie. Maybe I should!
i know the story of this book but i've never actually read it. great teaser

I've seen the movie a lot but never read the book! Like the wizard's quote on brains.

I have never read this book, I should really pick it up.

I haven't actually read this book, but now I definitely want to do just that....and here's MY TUESDAY MEMES POST
I always wanted to argue with that brains thing. After all, what good are experiences if you have no place to keep them?
Hi KB: I hope today's teasers will inspire you to pick up the story!
Beth Starr: Now you have me curious as to what annoys you about the movie. ;)
SparklingMinx: I think it's a classic everyone thinks they know, but many would be surprised at some of the differences between book and film. (For example, the shoes aren't red.)
Book Blather: Yes, I think it's pretty easy to guess at whom that second quote might be directed. *G*
bookskeepmesane: As mentioned to SparklingMinx above, I think everyone thinks they know the story, and perhaps they are familiar with the gist of it (girl lands in Oz, tries to get back home, meets odd cast of characters), but there is a lot in the book not mentioned in the movie, as well as other changes.
Karen and Gerard: It's kind of difficult NOT knowing the movie, isn't it? And now there is the musical WICKED, which embellishes the story even more.
Hi Cynthia! I do hope you will pick up the book and give it a try. Thanks for visiting.
Laurel-Rain: Glad I've intrigued you about the actual book. ;)
Alice: Well, there is that, I suppose, LOL. NOT that all people learn from their experiences anyway. ;)
I've seen this movie many times but never read the book. Love this teaser!
Thanks, Yvonne! Naturally, I had to watch the movie again when I finished reading the book. Now I wish I could afford tickets to WICKED, which is in town through June 9.
I can't wait to read this... I am starting it right now for my book club. It's on goodreads so if you want to join up and talk about it here is the link: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3551-young-adult-book-club
Angie
Hi Angie! Thanks for the invite, but I just read this for a group on GR. Enjoy! ☺
