My weekend at a glance...

Saturday: Art Fair on the Square and Art Fair off the Square, as well as a self-guided tour of the Capitol and a walk in the rooftop garden of Monona Terrace. More on all that later. *wink*

Sunday: I spent the afternoon with one of my best friends (and sorority big sis) from college. Claire was in town for a family gathering, to which I was invited. We had THE BEST TIME catching up. Here's hoping it won't be another decade before we see each other again!

Thursday Thirteen 101: Autism Awareness

* April is Autism Awareness Month, and April 2 World Autism Awareness Day. Though my own family has not been touched by autism, I have many friends whose children have been diagnosed with it.

* Today, Alpha Xi Delta is proud to announce a new philanthropic focus and partnership with Autism Speaks.

* Autism Speaks is the most prominent Autism awareness organization in the United States. They are dedicated to raising awareness of and funding research into the causes of autism.

* Autism or Autistic Syndrome Disorder is a development disorder that affects the way a person communicates with and relates to people around him. It is usually first noticed when a child reaches the age of three and is basically identified by three areas of difficulty for the autistic person: Social relationships and communications, imagination and planning, and repetitive behaviors.

* Some people with autism may never learn to talk, and may engage in repetitive movements. They have a reduced sensitivity to pain but are abnormally sensitive to sound, touch, and other sensory stimulation.

* The cause of autism is not known and last throughout a person’s lifetime. Recent studies suggest that some people have a genetic predisposition to autism. Researchers are looking for clues about genes that contribute to this increased susceptibility. Evidence also suggests that some emotional disorders such as manic depression occur more frequently than average in the families of people with autism. There is no cure for autism but treatment can help, which may include behavior and communication therapies and medicines to control symptoms. Some also believe that environmental factors (e.g. exposure to certain chemicals) may also be contributing factors.

* Autism affects 1 in 150 children, 1 in 94 boys today, compared to only 1 in 10,000 just thirteen years ago.

* Autism affects all ethnic, racial and social groups, but affects boys four times more than it does girls.

* Autism affects 1.5 million in the US alone, and tens of millions worldwide.

* Three children are diagnosed with some form of Autism every hour—that’s 24,000 each year.

* More children will be diagnosed this year with Autism than AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined.

* Despite its rapid growth, Autism receives a mere three-tenths of one percent of NIH funding. To give you an idea of how under funded research is, Leukemia affects 1 in 25,000 and receives $310 million in funding; MD affects 1 in 20,000 and receives $175 million in funding; and juvenile diabetes affects 1 in 500 and receives $130 million. Autism affects 1 in 150 and receives only $15 million in funding.

* In 2007, Gina K Designs introduced the “Love You to Pieces” stamp set. $8.00 of every set sold goes directly to Autism Speaks. Benefit your hobby and a worthwhile charity at the same time!

Borrowed from Jana

From Jana's blog...

1) Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, find line 4. Write down what it says. The first book had an illustration on page 18 so I set that aside and picked up the one under it, "Living the Dream: An Outline For a Life in Fiction." Since there was a paragraph continues from the previous page on page 18, I started the count with the first full paragraph and the fourth line is... "Visit a few big bookstores regularly." Ha! I think I do enough of that, thank you. More than enough!

2) Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What do you touch first? Nothing, I'm a couple inches shy of hitting the other desk.

3) What is the last thing you watched on TV? "Cold Case."

4) WITHOUT LOOKING, guess what the time is. 10:45pm

5) Now look at the clock, what is the actual time? 10:43pm...not bad!

6) With the exception of the computer, what can you hear? The radio playing softly on the other side of the room, crrently it's the "Grateful Dead" hour (This week: David Gans presents more from Bob Weir & Ratdog 3.1.06). Prior to that was "Etown" featuring the North Mississippi Allstars and Dave Alvin.

7) When did you last step outside? What were you doing? Midafternoon, in between rain drops. I went out to dislodge a large broken branch from the crab apple out front. Figured it was better than the risk of one of those gusts sending it through the new window only a few feet away.

8) Before you came to this website, what did you look at? I was reading posts at Romance Diva's.

9) What are you wearing? Pajamas. Warm, comfy ones. And light blue slipper socks, also warm and comfy.

10) Did you dream last night? Yes, I dream every night, usually very active, vivid ones. I can usually remember at least bits of them, but other than the fact they were pretty good ones for a change instead of the weird ones I usually have, I don't remember what they were about.

11) When did you last laugh? Last night at Kim's when she, Sherrie, Amber and I were moving the old sofa from living room to garage. We no sooner managed to heave it out the front door when the heavens opened wide and emptyied its contents on us, soaking us before we could get the stupid couch into the garage. We were laughing so hard at the timing of it our sides hurt.

12) What is on the walls of the room you are in? You're kidding, right? Okay, here goes. Two sorority paddles flanking a composite of sorority pictures; small shelf filled with autographed books and a framed copy of the "Symphony of Alpha Xi Delta" below that; a bisque Mardi Gras mask, various pictures of friends and family, among other things -- such as a framed print called "The Kiss IV" bought at the Minnesota Rennesaince Fest (it drew me in the moment I first saw it!) and a dew-covered pink rose taken by a friend when she went to Ireland; Wisconsin Book Festival poster; coat rack holding a tote bag, camera bag, towels, and a sweatshirt; large framed Mary Engelbreit print from a friend that says "The Queen of Everything"; curio shelf filled with small raccoons and trinket boxes.

13) Seen anything weird lately? Man wearing a fish cat at the Crazy Legs Run/walk yesterday -- apparently I missed the guy wearing a pink tutu -- and my friends.

14) What do you think of this quiz? Eh...it's okay.

15) What is the last film you saw? In the theater, "The Chronicles of Narnia."

16) If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy first? A new passport, followed by airline tickets to Europe.

17) Tell us something about you that we don't know. See question 21.

18) If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do? Umm... bigotry and intollerance?

19) Do you like to dance? Yes, but do not do so very often, except in the privacy of my home.

20) George Bush: is he a power-crazy nut case or someone who is finally doing something that has needed to be done for years? An ignorant, power-crazy nut case intent on spitting on the very Constitution he took a vow to uphold, and who should be impeached for all the lies and law-breaking (ie: illegal wire tapping) he has done. It is indisputable that were he a democrat pulling all this crap he never would have made it through a first term, let alone managed to dupe half the population into electing him for another.

21) Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her? I have never wanted children, nor do I plan to have any.

22) Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him? See above.

23) Would you ever consider living abroad? I have (three months in Norway) and would again, depending on the country. Maybe not permanently, but would relish the experience.

15 Things

Drats! I've been tagged by the evil Laura, so here are 15 things about me.

1. I've never been married, currently not looking, and have never wanted children.

2. I have one cat, Squeaky, who will be 19 come spring. Squeaky is part Russian Blue Persian and fancies herself a scintilating conversationalist. She was named by my sister Heidi and lives up to her name since her meows are usually long, drawn out high-pitched cries. Yeah, she's pathetic but fairly loveable.

3. I don't drive and have never had any desire to learn -- though I admit there are times it might be nice to just throw a bag in the car and just take off somewhere.

4. I don't drink soda. Seriously. One night freshman year in college, I realized I was reaching for the umpteenth soda of the day and couldn't remember when I'd kast had a glass of water. I started regulating how much of it I drank, and then about a year out of college just quit cold turkey. Now the only time I drink any is a 7Up or a Sprite on the rare occasion my stomach is feeling really icky. If I have even a couple sips of caffeinated soda I feel sick.

5. I had my first poem published when I was in the 4th grade. A series of youth writing programs, high school youth writers' conferences, and a HS writing club led by local YA author Jocelyn Riley followed. I was also on the editorial staff of the arts magazine in both HS and college.

6. I was an exchange student to Norway and am still in touch with my wonderful family, the Viks (just had a Christmas prezzie from them yesterday!). In 2000 my host parents finally visited the US, and I hope to someday return to Norway, a beautiful though expensive country.

7. I played violin in 4th through 11th grade, and one of the most memorable Christmases was the year I got my very own instrument. I tried the flute in 7th grade band (mandetory), but never got the hang of it, unlike my niece Elizabeth who now plays flute in HS band.

8. I always wanted to take gymnatics or skating lessons when I was younger, but never had the opportunity to do so.

9. I love to travel, though I've not had the chance to do so in a couple years, and seem to visit a cemetery almost every trip I take. Have I mentioned how much I love cemeteries?

10. I have a BA in French and English (writing emphasis), which is why I work at the crummy job I do. Maybe I should have listened to my HS Spanish teacher and gone into linguisitcs. *shudder* (For the record, senior year in HS I was in French 5, Spanish 1, and had just returned from three months in Norway so had a smattering of Norwegian. Senora C. had far more faith in my abilities than I did.)

11. I am a Stampin' Up! addict and have been crafting my own greeting cards for five or six years now. Earlier this year a friend introduced me to the Splitcoast Stampers website, where it is all too easy to be sucked into the gallery. So many cool designs!

12. I have six much older half siblings (one deceased) and two younger sisters -- which means a plethora of nieces and nephews and even a few greats, ranging from 11 months up to age 33. In fact, my oldest niece is 6 weeks older than my baby sister.

13. Though I've never sung in choir, I love singing, was song chair in my college sorority (I'm an Alpha Xi Delta alumna) and, along with a friend, once held an impromptu "concert" in the Disney Store at the mall. Is it our fault they had the complete Disney Song Book??

14. I am honored to count many published authors as friends, have had a mention in at least two books, and had many more dedicated to me by such greats as Tony Blake and Cathie Linz (who christened me as a Romance Diva in her "Married to a Marine" long before there was Romance Divas and reconfirmed it in "Cinderella's Sweet-Talking Marine"). And yes, I was mentioned in Margie's and Cyn's books, too -- though if Cyn doesn't quit killing me off I may have to hurt her.

and finally....

15. When I was in Norway, a friend of my host father's took us up in a 4-seater plane. We flew along the southwestern coast and over the village where my family lived. How exhillerating! When we returned to the airport I was allowed to experience the helicopter simulator, one of only a few such programs in the world.

Oh, and because that just reminded me of something else....

16. My favorite memories of Norway was the day we went to Stavanger and then visited an Iron Age farm. While we were in one of the buildings listening to our guide explain how some of the tools they found would have been used, I was suddenly transported back to that era. I was standing on the hillside looking down towards the sea where three swords now stand. I could see the buildings and farmstead as they were then, and could hear and understand the ancient tongue of the people working around me, even though I did not yet understand much Norwegian. It was an amazing experience, and it was only a mouse scurrying across the floor that startled me out of the vision. (Did I mention some of my ancestors were Norwegian?)

There. Now to tag someone -- Hey Jana! You're it! (That's what you get for that ribbing on your blog about some people neglecting theirs of late, hehe...) You, too, Cynny!
