Welcome to this week’s Friday 5. Please copy these questions to your webspace and answer them there. This week's topic is shapes.
1. What is your favorite shape of pasta?
I love tortellini with a meat sauce, so I guess I'll go with that, though I also like rotini.
2. Which of the Lucky Charms marshmallows is (or was) your favorite? [link provided for our non-U.S. friends]
I can't eat this stuff anymore, but used to love the green clover.
3. Of people you know who are older than forty, who’s in the best shape?
My neighbor Janet.
4. What shape is one of the more interesting scars on your body?
I only have two scars, but can't say either is a particular interesting shape. The one by my eye is just a small line near the corner, the one on my ankle a small splotch. Both are hardly noticeable.
5. Of a human’s internal organs, which do you think has the most interesting shape?
Not being a medical examiner, I can't say I've ever thought about this. However, if refering to the game of Operation, I was always kind of partial to the funny bone. ; )

Friday 5: Grand Slam
Copy these questions to your webspace and answer them there. Don’t forget to link us from your website!
This week’s 5 honors the World Series (ack!).
1. According to the cliche, if you “spare the rod,” you “spoil the child.” Who in your life was probably spared A Rod while growing up? Definitely baby sis, and her youngest (spoiled ROTTEN by her paternal g'father) is just as bad.
2. In how many directions this week did you feel you were being Yanked? At least twenty.
3. On whom have you depended for relief this week? I guess we'll count the maintenance man here, who relieved me of a major leak under the kitchen sink.
4. Who deserves a standing ovation this week (or even a hip-hip Jorge)? Thing 2, who went to bat for me Wednesday when I got caught in the middle of a power struggle between Thing 1 and Thing 3. They turned a bad day to worse, so the pep talk was much appreciated.
5. When did you last have a taste of Champagne? New Year's Eve.

Friday 5: At the Movies
Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5!
1. What’s your favorite sports movie?
Oooh...tough one. So many great movies I could name -- Miracle, Eight Men Out, Field of Dreams...but I think my favorite is A League of Their Own.
2. What’s your favorite romantic comedy film?
Again, so many titles come to mind. Speechless, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally... I think at top of the heap, though, would be While You Were Sleeping.
3. What’s your favorite animated Disney movie?
That's a tie between Mulan and Cinderella. I love them both!
4. What’s your favorite non-Disney movie musical?
Non-Disney? There is such a thing?? Just... Kidding! Umm...lemme think a second... Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Carousel. The Music Man. No... Let's go with The Sound of Music.
5. What’s your favorite stranger-in-a-strange-land / fish-out-of-water movie?
This is the easiest question yet: French Kiss. The soundtrack is awesome, too!
Thanks for participating and have a celluloid weekend!

Friday 5: Getting to Know You
Have not done this in about a month, but the questions are pretty decent this week.
From the Friday5.org blog: Background story: Some friends and I were talking one night about smalltalk and how what most of us want is to get past it and to find out what people really care about. We figured that if you could come up with the kinds of questions that don’t violate social conventions (taboo subjects, for example, or questions that are too personal) but give you an idea of what really matters to the other person, you could jump past smalltalk and get right to the good stuff. Here are five that we thought might work! One of the questions is very similar to a question posted in October three years ago, but that’s okay!
1.What are the titles of the last three books you read all of?
Keepsake Crimes by Laure Childs
Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone by JK Rowling
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling
2. What are the titles of between three and five magazines you subscribe to or used to subscribe to?
The Writer
Papercrafts
The Quill of Alpha Xi Delta
(I'm not a big magazine reader)
3. What’s on your night table? (we figured this one was borderline, since it involves the bedroom, but if the vibe is right and you preface the question with the background story I told above, you could make it work)
On top-- Lamp, alarm clock, radio, glass filled with pens, pencils, highlighters and bookmarks, a book I plan to read in October, Blistex
Drawer-- Flashlight and spare batteries, notebook, book light, lotion, memo pad
Open Bottom Section: About 30 books from the TBR mountain range. These are usually books I am most interested in reading at the moment, and tends to change regularly. Several suspense titles by Lisa Gardner and a couple by Nora Roberts at the moment. These will give way to mostly Christmas titles come mid-November.
4. What are the three best things that happened to you in the past seven days?
We finally had rain, after three weeks of dry conditions
Received a long letter from a friend
Paycheck!
5. What was your senior yearbook quote, and what would your yearbook quote be this year if there were such a thing?
We didn't have senior quotes, but we did have senior wills (things you will friends). As that was eons ago and my yearbooks are packed away, I honestly cannot tell you what I wrote for mine. I think I willed Angie some pens...

Friday 5: Taboo!
This week’s 5 is inspired by the party game called Taboo, in which players must make their teammates utter key words by giving them clues. The twist is that each key word is assigned five Taboo words, and players are forbidden from using the Taboo words in their clues. For example, one key word might be milk, and its Taboo words might be dairy, cow, drink, white, and carton. Your clue might be something like, “It’s a beverage from Bessie,” or “You add it to coffee,” or “The land of BLANK and honey.”
Your task is simply to answer these five questions without using any of the Taboo words or phrases. Challenge yourself not just to avoid using the words, but to think of fresh, new answers to these sort of cliched meme questions!
1.Who’s making a positive difference in your life?
Taboo words: friends, family, husband/wife/spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend.
My boss--if only because that paycheck allows me to buy groceries and put a roof over my head, and that's postitive, right? (And did I mention I got a raise this month?)
2.Where would you like to be right now?
Taboo words: home, bed, anywhere but here.
Europe. France, Norway, Scotland...they're all good to me. *g*
3.What’s the first thing you’d do with a $5,000 (or your local equivalent) gift?
Taboo words: save, debt, vacation, payments, invest.
Update my passport and buy a plane ticket.
4.What super-power would you really like to have?
Taboo words: invisibility, x-ray vision, flying, strength, transform.
Not being seen--oh, wait...I already possess that power. How about mind-reading?
5.What’s your favorite sound?
Taboo words: laughter, music, ocean, wind, ____’s voice.
Falling rain.

Friday 5: Usefulness
1. What’s something in your possession that has long outlived its usefulness?
I guess that would be the heavy grey/black plaid flannel shirt I wear as a jacket. It was my Dad's, and I took possession of it when he died in 2001. I've been wearing it to work this week, with the weather so cool for July. It's still warm, but the seams and cuffs are showing some signs of stress these days. I'll get rid of it when it either completely falls apart, or I find a comparable replacement.
2. Who in your life has proven to be a very useful person to know?
Um...myself. Seriously, people come to me when they need help or advise.
3. For group projects requiring collaborative planning and then collaborative execution, in what capacity are you most useful?
I usually do okay in either, depending what needs planning, but I usually prefer being in on the execution more than the planning. Give me a task with clear directions of what you want, and I'm pretty much good to go.
4. What’s something someone gave you that you didn’t think much of but later became surprisingly useful?
The tool kit my parents got each of us girls for Christmas, my freshman year in college. They got us each one because younger sister wanted one. At the time, I didn't think much of it as there were other things actually on my wish list I would have prefered, but boy has it proved useful over the years! It looks similar to that pictured here, except mine is blue. The utility knife isn't that great, but I have gotten a lot of use out of everything else in the kit.
5. What is the most useful book in your house?
Duh...the Dictionary. I haul it out at least once a week (and not just as a door stop).

2. What is your favorite style of doughnut?
Bavarian cream filled bismarck.
3. What’s your favorite flavor of Lifesavers?
Wintergreen
4. What O-shaped breakfast cereals do you like?

Friday 5: Dairy
Since it's June Dairy Month, I guess this week's questions are more than appropriate.
1.What are your feelings about milk?
Love milk. I can drink a gallon a week, easily (1% - skim is too watery, don't care so much for 2%)
2.What are your feelings about cheese?
Depends on the kind of cheese. Cheddar would win out as my favorite, but I also like cojack, mozerella and brie. Absolutely no blue cheese or limburger. Ugh!
3.What are your feelings about yogurt?
Yogurt is okay. Not a big fan, but I'll have a Yoplait Whip on occasion.
4.How do you feel about soy milk?
Ugh! Sorry, that is not milk!
5.How far are you from the nearest cow?
Not that far, actually. I pass at least four farms with cows every morning on my way to work. My favorites are the Scottish Highland cattle. They have the cutest faces!

Friday 5: Bugs
1. What bugs truly freak you out?
Cockroaches...UGH! *shudder*
2. Which Bugs Bunny cartoon do you remember most fondly?
"The Wabbit of Seville" . . . Sing it with me --
"Kill da wabbit
Kill da wabbit
Kill da wabbit
bombombom"
Hehe....
3. What bugs you most about your life online?
Not being able to keep up with posts or blogs the way I'd like to--sometimes due to life being too busy, sometimes because of internet connection issues (like the near-constant summer construction in my area that frequently interrupts service. I can tell the instant they start working--I'll be zipping along and then suddenly...nothing). Also those annoying/rude/insipid individuals who, no matter how hard you try to avoid, keep popping up in the same forums you do. They can really try your patience some days!
4. Which of your favorite websites seems often to be especially buggy?
Hmm...I tend to stick with known and trusted sites that rarely have issues, but IE seems particularly buggy of late. Somebody please tell me it's not just me!
5. When were you last too sick to get out of bed?
An easy one--the first weekend in March, when I had the flu. I was fine when I went out with friends for my birthday Friday night, but by Sunday afternoon...ugh!

Friday 5 -- Great Outdoors
When did you last sleep in a tent?
Umm... It's been so long, I really had to think about this. I think the last time I went camping was Door County in 2000, so nine years. Yikes! I really love camping, but it just hasn't been in the cards.
What comes to mind when you think about relieving yourself in the great outdoors?
Yuck! I'd rather hold it as long as possible than go outdoors. I prefer a bit of privacy and poison ivy free zones, TYVM.
Where’s the best place you ever went camping?
Big Pine Campground in Custer, South Dakota. Clean, quiet, friendly staff and right in the heart of the Black Hills area we wanted to explore. I would stay there again in a heart beat!
What’s your favorite camp food?
S'mores and pudgie pies.
What’s your sleeping bag like?
Tan and cozy warm.

Friday 5
1. What is your favorite fizzy, bubbly drink? None, I don't drink soda (the exception being when I have the flu, and then maybe 7Up)
2. What is your favorite deep-fried food? Well, since I'm from Wisconsin, you know I have to say either mozerella sticks or cheese curds.
3. What is your favorite hot beverage? Swiss Miss French Vanilla hot cocoa
4. What is your favorite really messy food? Barbeque chicken
5. What is your favorite recipe for a blended or mixed beverage? I don't actually have a recipe per se, but my favorite "blended" beverage would be a strawberry margarita. Man, could I go for a couple of those about now! Not to mention a warm beach to drink them on. *G*

Friday 5
1. On March 6, 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev presented the first Periodic Table of the Elements to the Russian Chemical Society. What memories do you have of your high-school chemistry course?
Chemistry...ugh! I was lost and miserable in HS chemistry. I hated it. None of my friends were in the same class and I didn't have a regular lab partner, getting stuck with whoever's partner was absent on lab days. Yay, me. I barely passed with a C, but at least I didn't blow up the chem lab, as one of my older half sisters did years before.
My college chem class was better and I passed with a B (A in labs, but tests brought the grade down a bit). I had a great partner, Joy, and she only blew up one of our experiments. And yes, it was all her. She was late to lab the day we were to extract caffeine from tea to make aspirin and missed the professor's admonishment not to turn the bunsen burner above a certain level. She grew impatient as we were about 15 minutes behind everyone else (and whose fault was that again??). I told her not to turn it up, but as soon as my back was turned she did anyway and POOF! Liquid exploded everywhere. Good thing it was under a hood! Ironically, despite our late start and Joy's little mishap, the prof told us our speciman was the best-looking of the class. Heh!
2. On March 6, 1899, the Bayer company registered aspirin as a trademark. When did you last take medication for pain?
Ha! Love the irony in the order of these questions, considering the above story. I haven't taken any Aspirin recently, but did pop a couple Acetaminophen for a headache earlier today.
3. On March 6, 1853, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata premiered in Venice. How do you feel about opera?
Opera is okay. Not my first choice in theater entertainment, but I have nothing against it.
4. On March 6, 1947, American film director Rob Reiner (Meathead!) was born. Which of these Reiner-directed films have you seen, and what do you think of them? (Those I've seen are in red)
The Bucket List (2007)
Rumor Has It… (2005)
Alex & Emma (2003)
The Story of Us (1999)
Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) Good movie!
The American President (1995) Love it, it's one of my faves!
North (1994)
A Few Good Men (1992) Another excellent movie
Misery (1990) Eh...it was okay. Definitely not a fave
Postcards From the Edge (1990)
When Harry Met Sally… (1989) Yes, yes, yes!
The Princess Bride (1987) Another good one!
Stand by Me (1986) Good, but not a favorite
The Sure Thing (1985)
This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
5. On March 6, 1972, American basketball-player Shaquille O’Neal was born. How do you feel about basketball?
Well...that depends. It's not at the top of my list of sports I like or will watch. In fact, I've only ever attended one basketball game in my life, when a HS friend dragged me to one so she could drool over a guy on the opposing team. Though my college's teams did pretty well, I never went to any of the games, and only occasionally watch Badger basketball on TV (ie: when nothing else is on, or they make it to the playoffs). Locally, March means avoiding the malls at all costs. Boys and girls hockey is this weekend. Girls state basketball is in town next weekend, and boys the following. Between the three, the stores are way too crowded and overflowing with teens. We do watch some of the games that are televised, though, especially if any of the local teams are playing.

Souvenirs
Since I have absolutely nothing else to post today (unless you really want to here me bitch about the damn wrestle mania going on over my head last night), I thought I'd participate in this week's Friday 5, something I rarely do 'cause their questions are usually too darn hard. This week's...piece of cake, even if it has been eight years since I've had a vacation.
1. When you travel, what kinds of souvenirs do you like to bring home for yourself?
Post cards and a magnet or two from someplace visited. For example, I have an alligator that says Reptile Gardens, a covered bridge from a tour in Ohio, and a magnolia from visiting my sister when she lived in Louisiana. Friends occasionally add to the collection from places they've been as well.
2. Is there a certain kind of souvenir you always bring back for a particular someone?
Whenever my sister or a friend or I go anywhere new, we always bring a spoon back for my mom.
3. Of the souvenirs you’ve collected from your travels, what are some that have special meaning for you?
A soapstone gargoyle bought near Le Cathedral de Notre Dame, Paris; and a set of windchimes from the Petrified Forest, Black Hills, South Dakota. Other than that, I've never really bought anything for myself on trips other than what was mentioned in question number one.
4. What’s the silliest souvenir you’ve brought back for yourself, or what’s the silliest souvenir someone has brought back for you?
I guess that would be the gargoyle. *grin*
5. If you were going to send someone a souvenir from places you visited today, what might it be?
Depends on the individual and place visited. Definitely a spoon for Mom, probably a t-shirt for my youngest niece. Other than that, probably just a postcard to rub in the fact that I was there and they were not. *WEG*

Friday 5 #1
Ahh...a Friday5 I can actually do!
What was the last thing you baked?
A red velvet cake for Mom's birthday.
What was the last thing you tried on for size?
New walking shoes. I stepped on a very large rock or something--big enough to indent the bottom of my shoe and break the sole, which was poking into the bottom of my left foot. The feet have been much happier these past couple weeks.
What was the last thing you purchased on credit?
Oh, geez. That was a few weeks ago, a couple books and...I honestly don't remember what else was on it. Think it was meds for Mom. It wasn't very much, but I didn't have quite enough cash on me to cover it.
What was the last thing you put a postage stamp on?
Ah, an easy one! That would be a couple hand-stamped birthday cards made last night that need to go out tomorrow. (They're already posted to my SCS gallery, will post some here soon.)
What was the last thing you took a photo of?
Have you not been paying attention all week? That would be cemetery photos--specifically from the recent Talking Spirits tour at Forest Hill Cemetery.
