A Solemn Day

It's no accident, I think, that this song has been at the top of the charts in recent weeks. I know it's been on my mind quite a bit since it was released and, like the lead singer, my father died in September, not so very long ago. It makes for a rough month, though it gets a little better with the passing years. My one solace is that he had no comprehension of the events that happened on this day four years ago. Though it wasn't written about September 11, the song hits home with a lot of people, myself included, and seems an appropriately song for such a solemn occasion.

Wake Me Up When September Ends
Green Day

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father’s come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father's come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

They played that song on one of the concerts this weekend, and I almost cried. It is indeed fitting.

Brings tears to your eyes, doesn't it? With 9/11 and Katrina, I think many of us will be glad to put this month behind us.

Heather...Honey, it's like you read my mind. I haven't heard this song before but I think I'll look for it now. (((hugs)))

Jana~ Oh, honey, you have to hear this song! Ask one of those hot bods you're always drooling over at work - or you could look it up on Amazon.com and hear a snippet there. It's from Green Day's "American Idiot" CD.

Gina~ Yeah, it played over images from the disaster areas during the telethon that played on all the major networks - but they only played a portion of it. The other thing that irked me with that program was how they cut Dr. John's song off at the end. Hello! It's Dr. John, for Pete's sake.

K~ Yeah...only 2.5 weeks to go. Me, I much prefer October - the crunch of leaves underfoot, the pungeant earthy smell...what's not to like?
