Thursday Thirteen #35: Happy Thanksgiving

It's Thanksgiving here in the USA, a day when we gather together with family and/or friends and express a bit of gratitude for all we have in our lives, then gorge ourselves in anticipation of Black Friday and the "official" start to the Christmas shopping season. Here's what you might find on the tables of many American families for dinner today--which, of course, will not be served until after the Green Bay Packers complete a successful safari in Detroit. Let's go hunt some Lions! *GRIN*

1. Turkey
2. Ham
3. Stuffing
4. Mashed Potatoes
5. Gravy
6. Sweet Potatoes
7. Green Beans (preferably NOT in casserol form)
8. Corn
9. Fruit Salad (Mix sliced cherries, pineapple, Mandarin oranges, apples, green grapes, bananas and mini marshmallows with Cool Whip. YUM!)
10. Crescent rolls (Definitely need more than one package!)
11. Cranberry Sauce (Yuck! This is only on my table for the BIL)
12. Black Olives (Our family requires multiple cans, LOL)
13. Pumpkin Pie topped with whipped topping

Personally, I think y'all are smart to hold it in early October. It gets rather hectic this time of year with too big celebrations and dinners so close together. Not to mention how poor Thanksgiving is so overlooked by merchants anymore. They seem to go right from Halloween to Christmas until it's time to sell all those turkies.

Happy Thanksgiving! It's interesting to see how traditions vary from region to region. The highlights have all been hit though, so all's good!

My TT's up at http://impulsivehearts.wordpress.com.

Thanks Shelley - I'll think of you while enjoying a slice of pumpkin pie. ;)

Darla~ This is the meal I will (more or less) get to enjoy Saturday; today was just me and Mom so no huge dinner, but family will be here this weekend. Hopefully I have the energy after shopping all day Friday. My friends insist I get up at 3am!

Kate~ See, it's the fried onions where you lose me. I can't stand onions, taste or smell.

Thanks, Gina, and Happy Thanksgiving you as well!

Adelle~ LOL...trade ya! *VBG*

Kaige~ it is interesting to see the subtle variations by region, isn't it? Happy Thanksgiving!

My family requires multiple cans of black olives too. LOL.
Hope you've had a wonderful day.

What is wrong with cranberries? They are good for your health, they proved it. Ah, oh well, I won't try to convert you, that just leaves more for me and BIL.

Hope you had a wonderful day!

No rice?

Jennifer M~ Yay, a kindred spirit! LOL

Haven~ Sorry, I can't stand the taste of cranberry, plus it always upsets my stomach. You're more than welcome to my share.

Alice~ Ugh, definitely no rice. Another food I can't eat. Reminds me of maggots.

Hope everyone has had a good Thanksgiving weekend!

LOL Heather, I'm not fond of rice, either, but more because I don't like the taste. ;)

Your list sounds fairly similar to ours. Except we call stuffing "dressing" because we don't generally stuff our turkies down here. (Ours was deep fried and Oh. My. Gosh. was it goooooood.) And we don't do black olives and there's always a TON of different casseroles (though I hafta say I can't stand the green bean casserole either. I love the ff onion rings but can't stand the cream of whatever soup. Blech!) And desserts out the wazoo. Three dif. kinds of cake, four dif. kinds of pie, cookies, pear salad (which is disgusting and also not exactly a dessert but it just came to mind.)

It's only been in recent years that I have developed a love of cranberry sauce. I love it on my dressing. Yum. Not a big gravy fan though. Can't stand the stuff.

Anyhoo, hope you enjoyed your big meal Saturday. :)

Jana~ Wow, that is a lot of desserts! We usually only have one or two kinds of pie, though Thanksgiving at my sister's also includes birthday cake. BIL's family always has one day a month to celebrate family birthdays all together, so they bring the November cake to Thanksgiving (mostly 'cause they're cheap).

As for the stuffing...you're technically not supposed to stuff the bird brfore cooking anymore (apparently turkey juices can mix with the stuffing and breed samonella), but a lot of people still do. We usually have it on the side as it's just plain easier.

We have a big family and we're all big eaters. LOL (who love sweets.) It's potluck so everyone contributes a side dish and a dessert. My uncle does the turkey and Mama and Aunt Linda do the dressings. We have to have two dif. kinds. One for those with sodium intake/onion/spices issues and one with everything.
