Thursday Thirteen 96: Books to Movies 2

This is a similar topic to one I did a few weeks ago, except this time I have listed thirteen movies I’ve seen that are based on books I have not read (at least not yet). Naturally, this list could be at least ten times longer; these are just the first thirteen that popped into my head.

* Chocolat (One of my favorite movies ever!)
* Sense & Sensibility
* Pride & Prejudice
* Under the Tuscan Sun
* About a Boy
* The Notebook
* Harry Potter (1-5) (Nope, haven’t read any, but have all the movies.)
* Fried Green Tomatoes
* The Bourne Trilogy (Again, have the movies, have not read the books.)
* Beaches
* Romancing the Stone (Did YOU know it was based on a book?)
* The Devil Wears Prada
* Bridget Jones’ Diary

LINKS TO OTHER THURSDAY THIRTEENS:

Alice Audrey * Shelley Munro * Nicholas * Karen
Ms Menozzi * Thornesworld * CountryDew
Stephanie Adkins * Carmen Shirkey * Jennifer McKenzie
Tricia * RJ LeBeau * Mel * Paige Tyler * Claudia
Adelle Laudan * Colleen * Samulli * Jenn
Jenna Bayley-Burke * Jenn * Jehara

(leave your link in comments, I’ll add you here!)

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others’ comments. It’s easy, and fun! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things.

I liked your list... I have seen quite a few of movies from your list without reading the books. I don't like knowing what a movie is about ahead of time.

I've had Chocolat on the top of my Netflix list for ages, but the rest of my family keeps bumping it down.

I've actually read quite a few of these as well as seen the movies. I have to say Johnny Depp was pretty awesome in Chocolat.

There are 9 there that I have seen but not read. Funny, I saw Chocolat a few years ago but I can't remember a single thing about it.

Okay, word of warning time:

The movie and the book for Under the Tuscan Sun are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! The movie is rather "chick-flick"-ish (I'm guessing you've seen it, right?), of course. The book is a straightforward "American-in-Italy-builds-her-new-holiday-home-with-her-husband-in-tow" tale.

There are elements of Mayes' books (UTTS, Bella Tuscany and In Tuscany) scattered throughout, but the storyline of the film is pure fiction. They even tell you so at the end of the film.

Just don't go reading the book expecting to read the film's storyline.

There, I said it.

"About a Boy", however, is a great book! I recommend it most highly. However, the ending is different from that in the film.

You have been warned. ;)

And, wow - you've got a lot of films from books under your belt, haven't you? Heh.

Enjoy!

Happy TT!

Hmmm. I have read half of those books. Well, more than half if you count the Harry Potters individually :-)
Happy TT!
I'm up at both Thornesworld
and The Eclectic Witch.
I hope you'll stop by!

Great list, and some of my favorite movies! I haven't read the book for most of those either.

If you liked the HP movies, you'll really like the books. I highly recommend them!

I've seen all the Harry Potter movies as well, but haven't read the books. My daughter has the whole series and has read it umpteen times. lol
Great list. Happy T13!

Yikes. I've seen every one. Except on one Harry Potter.

I love the Bourne books AND the movies (which is weird since they're VERY different). It's always interesting how the book gets translated. I think I said that last week too. LOL.
And yes, I did know "Romancing The Stone" was a book though I've never read it.

Wow, I've read Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Under the Tuscan Sun, and The Notebook; but never seen the movies. Ive also read all the Harry Potter books and seen the movies for the first 5. And I had no clue that Romancing the Stone was based on a book, not sure I'm going to dig that one up. Thanks for the fun 13 list.

I used to not like movies made from books, but I see it now as another way to distribute the story. That's cool. :)

I did a similar list a few weeks back. Chocolate was on it, but I could just kick myself that I forgot Fried Green Tomatoes, because I just love the film (and the book as well). About a boy was quite good, too.
Thanks for reminding me.

Karen - Sometimes I prefer reading the book ahead of time, sometimes I don't feel the inclination or that it is necessary. All depends on the book/movie, LOL.

Alice - *Gasp* How dare they deprive you!

Shelley - Wasn't he? Depp is an actor I can take or leave, but I absolutely loved him in Chocolate.

Nicholas - No offense, but that's probably because you're a guy. ;)

If I've read the book, I hate watching the movie...if I've watched the movie, I hate reading the book. They're too different most of the time.

We've seen Harry Potter and Romancing the Stone! LOL!

*hugs*

Ms Menozzi - Yup, I am aware that the Tuscan book is drastically different from the movie loosely based on it. Love that movie, though! I have also heard great praise for About a Boy, so may put that on my reading list some day.

Thorne - LOL...feel free to count the HP books individually. I lumped them all together for sake of convenience. ;)

Country - Glad to hear I'm not the only one who hasn't read some of these!

Stephanie - I'd like to read some of these as well, esp. P&P, which is on my list of books to read this year.

Heather said...

Carmen - Thanks, I have had several people offer to loan me their books. I will probably take them up on it...some day. ;)

Adelle - So glad to hear I'm not the only person who has not yet read the HP books.

Colleen - Ahh...another movie buff? Hehe...

Jennifer M - I have wanted to read the Bourne books for some time now, just haven't got round to them. I remember you telling me that Marie is constant throughout the books, unlike the movies, so would definitely like to see how that relationship differs and influences Bourne.

Heather said...

BTW, Jennifer - Show off! You would know Romancing the Stone was based on a book.
:-P~~~

Tricia - Wow, you haven't see any of those four movies? I've actually seen two versions of P&P--the old B&W and the Keira Knightly ones. People keep telling me I *really* need to see the PBS version.

Claudia - Sometimes the movie can completely miss the mark or ruin the book (hence the reason I never intend to watch The Bridges of Madison County...just the stuff I've heard about it is enough to tell me I'd hate it when I loved the book), but sometimes they do an excellent job in translating book to screen. IMO, though, I think older directors did a better job than current ones in bringing a book alive.

Samulli - Great minds think alike, eh? Will definitely have to visit your blog and check out your book-to-movie list as well!

Jenn - Sometimes I feel like that, but other times I admit to being curious as to how they adapted the book to screenplay.

Paige - That's it? Thos are the only ones on my list you've seen? You haven't even ogled Johnny Depp? I am shocked! *VBG*

Jenn - Thanks for another recommend for About A Boy!

Jehara - Ah, another supporter of P&P. *Sigh* Guess I'm going to have to pluck that one out of the TBR soon!

I just watched Chocolat. Excellent! Loved it.
