Monday Movie Meme: Mobsters

Share on your blog mafia movies that left their mark with you and link back to The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants to find their recommendations!

Here's my list, featuring one of my all-time favorite movies, followed by a couple of comedies featuring the mob. Hey, these guys beg to be laughed at, don't they?

*** The Untouchables (1987; Kevin Kostner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia) -- Federal Agent Elliot Ness sets out to take out Al Capone; because of rampant corruption, he assembles a small, hand-picked team.

*** Married to the Mob (1988; Michelle Pfeiffer, Alec Baldwin) -- An undercover FBI agent falls in love with a recently widowed mafia wife seeking to start her life over after her husband's murder and who is also pursued by a libidinous mafia kingpin seeking to claim her for himself.

*** The Freshman (1990; Marlon Brando, Matthew Broderick) -- Clark Kellogg is a young man starting his first year at film school in New York City. After a small time crook steals all his belongings, Clark meets Carmine "Jimmy the Toucan" Sabatini, an "importer" bearing a startling resemblance to a certain cinematic godfather. When Sabatini makes Clark an offer he can't refuse, he finds himself caught up in a caper involving endangered species and fine dining.

*** Mickey Blue Eyes (1999; Hugh Grant, James Caan, Jeanne Tripplehorn) -- An English auctioneer proposes to the daughter of a mafia kingpin, only to realize that certain "favors" would be asked of him.

*** Johnny Dangerously (1984, Michael Keaton) -- Set in the 1930's, an honest, goodhearted man is forced to turn to a life of crime to finance his neurotic mother's skyrocketing medical bills.

Mob movies. I haven't seen any! Well, now that you mentioned Mickey Blue Eyes...I did see that one...not Hugh Grant's best, though.

I'm glad to see you included the comedic turns of the genre. I wanted to include Married to the Mob as an example for those who don't like the typcial mafia flicks but didn't want to hog them all. I would add My Blue Heaven to your comedy themed list - the witness protection program was never so funny!

Heather - *gasp* You have to have seen more than one mafia movie! The more I thought about the topic, the more movies I came up with. I would agree with you that MBE wasn't Grant's best, but it was still pretty funny.

Molly - Ack! I completely forgot about My Blue Heaven. I haven't seen that one in ages, but remember laughing my butt off. Thanks for the reminder!

Married to the Mob sounds good. Maybe I should try to watch one Mob flick. Which would you recommend? Thanks for stopping by today.

Hi Kaye! All on my list are good, but I would highly recommend The Untouchables (Hello! Sean Connery and Kevin Kostner!) and The Freshman -- it's kind of corny, but funny.

You listed some fantastic movies here! I love the Untouchables and Married to the Mob is so funny! Same with Johnny Dangerously. It's great that you veered towards the comedic mob movies as it shows how versatile the material is!

Thanks Lindsay and Amy. I figured (correctly) that most people would concentrate on the darker, more serious films, so decided I would list some of the funnier ones. My Fake Finace is another that touches on the more comedic side.

That's a great list! Married to the Mob was a fun movie. I don't think I've seen any of the others you list. I'll have to though.

I've never seen any of these movies, with the exception of bits and pieces of The Untouchables.

Lit Feline - Thanks, and do check out the other movies mentioned. You won't regret it!

Latesha - Now why am I not surprised? lol
