Thursday Thirteen 162: Art Fair

This past weekend, July 10 and 11, was the annual Art Fair On the Square and Art Fair Off the Square here in Madison. The former features around 450 artists from across the country, while the latter is Wisconsin artists only. It was extremely hot up town this weekend, but despite that and the fact you can't afford any of the wares for sale, it's always fun to walk around and look at all the different media, including: ceramics, fiber, glass, wood, jewelry, painting, photography, sculpture and graphics. I've denoted those who are from Wisconsin, the medium, and included websites where I could. Enjoy!

Some of the ceramic bowls displayed near the High School Clay Coalition booth. All products were made by students from East High School and West High School in Madison.

Scarves in every color!

Pretty gourds. Sorry, I missed who these were by.

Stoneware by Wisconsin artisan Carolina Niebres.

Stained glass.

There be dragons here! Love the whimsical metal sculptures by Brady Lueck of Wisconsin.

Fiber/Leather. Gotta love the look and smell of this booth, Roche Leather!

That frog can jam! Steel/Outdoor art by Wisconsin artist James Sauer.

I don't think I need to explain why this was one of my absolute favorite booths. Alas, they are far outside my meager budget, but sooooo pretty to look at. Check out Mychal Mitchell's website to see more, or to place an order.

I love the way these woven wire sculptures by Michael Gard seem to float on the air.

These cow paintings by Sue Skowronski made me smile.

This photo and the next are by the same artist, Mark Sijan, who was Best of Show in 2009. He works in Sculpture and 3D Media. You have to check out his website!

Wow, that looks like a fun day. I can't decide if I like the french-horn playing frog or the air people better. Some amazing work!

Happy Thirteening...great list.

Nicola: If I had the money, I would definitely choose one of the air people...provided I had a place to put it/them. Thanks for visiting! *g*

That one cow looks so surprised. You gotta wonder.

I particularly like the floating sculptures. May I write a poem about them?

I love the gourds! It's my first time ever to see those.

Mark Sijan is amazing and so are those wire sculptures. I'm off to be shocked by the prices of those leather covers.
Great list. Happy T13!

Stephanie: Art fairs are great for inspiration and people watching, aren't they?

Deb: I love those wire sculptures. And yes, the students did an excellent job, and had a brisk business at their stall.

Alice: You would notice the cows, LOL.

Rinkley: Write away! I'm sure the artist would be flattered to know he'd inspired people.

Heather said...

Adelle: Easy to see why they were among my favorite booths, isn't it? So how shocked were you by the price of the journals?

Dennis: Definitely a fun event, and something the entire family can take in. Something there for everyone, no matter what one's tastes. I'm lucky to live in an area that promotes the arts and where there are several art fairs of different sizes not only during the summer, but throughout the year.

David: I had a feeling people would love those wire sculptures as much as I do! *g*

Heather said...

Erin: Be prepared to be amazed. The work he showed at the fair was amazing enough, but there is so much more on Sijan's website.

Shelley: The different booths are all tempting in one way or another. There is so much to see and most of the artists quite amiable.

Hazel: Aren't the gourds awesome? I love how fun and festive they are!

Heather said...

Kristen: Amazing talent and creativity both, and of all ages, too.

Elise: No question as to why those were two of my favorite displays, is there? *vbg*

Harriet: Definitely love them! Arts and crafts fairs are a great way to spend a day, or just an hour or two.

Journeywoman: Those wire sculptures truly were amazing - there was just enough breeze that day so that they looked like they were dancing on air.

Jana said...

Ooo, ahhh, gorgeous! Well, right up until the severed head! lol

Heather said...

Anita: Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed!

Inez: It is, isn't it? And these are only 12 of more than 600 booths one could stop and gawk at!

Brandy: Thank you, and thanks for stopping by!

Jennifer: See what you miss by never visiting your sister? (Kidding - I know you have A LOT on your plate right now.)

Janice: Er, which sculptures did you like? The wire ones or the ones at end of the post? They're both pretty great, aren't they?

Kaye said...

The Frog is awesome!!! Hope you had a great time.

Heather said...

Thanks, Kaye! It was a good time. Just wish I could afford to buy some of what I saw, lol.
