Unfortunately, with a winter storm coming in Monday night into Tuesday morning, we will not get to see the only total lunar eclipse of this year, and the first one to fall on a solstice in nearly 500 years. There will be two lunar eclipses in 2011, but it is extremely rare for a total lunar eclipse to fall during the winter solstice. The last occurance was in the 1600s, and the next won't be until 2094, 2363 and 2382.
Due to all the volcanic ash in the atmosphere this year, they are expecting the moon to be a vibrant red, and many observatories across North America are hosting open houses open to the public tonight. I hope those who can stay up late to view it enjoy the experience!
