Teaser Tuesday 95: The Cat Who...

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few “teaser” sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

The July featured author in the Cozy Mysteries group at GoodReads was the recently departed Lilian Jackson Braun. Though I had picked up the first four books in the series for a song at one of the local used book shops last year, I had not got round to actually reading them, so this was just the push needed, even if I did get the first book in at the last minute, reading it over the weekend. Not sure what I think of the series yet, but I absolutely love Koko, the Siamese cat.

I hope you will forgive me this longer passage from
The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, but I loved what was said here, and I'm sure all those who have ever been owned by a cat will both appreciate and agree with it. I've also posted something from the second book in the series, The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern, which I've just started. I'm not this far along yet, but almost.

Cats have many gifts that are denied humans, and yet we tend to rate them by human standards. To understand a cat, you must realize that he has his own gifts, his own viewpoint, even his own morality. A cat's lack of speech does not make him a lower animal. Cats have a contempt of speech. Why should they talk when they can communicate without words? They manage very well among themselves, and they patiently try to make their thoughts known to humans. But in order to read a cat, you must be relaxed and receptive.
(pg 60, The Cat Who Could Read Backwards)

"If there's evidence of conspiracy, the police will uncover it. They know what they're doing. You keep out of it. We've got troubles enough."
(pg 60, The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern)

These are quick, easy reads in the cozy mystery genre. Click on any of the above links to read more about the books, or about the author Lilian Jackson Braun.

Good teaser. Cats are very cool animals, I think. I've read a couple of these, but a long time ago.

Fantastic title for a book.."The Cat Who Could Read Backwards"...and it would be just like a cat to be able to do that!I adore these teasers! The teaser passage about cats is right on & terrific! If you've ever been to my blog, you know I'm a crazy cat lover yet I've never read Liilian Jackson Braun's books. I must get to that soon!

Tania: It is a great title, isn't it?

Wendi: Thanks, I'm glad you liked!

Kyanara: Thank. You! *g*

Shelley: This is another case of seeing the books around for years before finally getting round to trying them. I've heard the earliest ones are the best, the last couple not as good. With 30 books in the series, don't know if I'll ever get through all of them, but will definitely read the four I have.

Amy: What's not to love about cats, right? She certainly nailed their personalities with this passage.

These books have been around for a long time, haven't they? I'm a dog person, myself!

I'd say the same is true of most creatures. It's a matter of seeing things the way they do.

TBM: Thanks!

Jenny Q: Yes, the first three were published in the mid-1960s, and then the series was picked up again in the 1980s. There are 30 books in the series, plus a few anthologies.

Alice: Very true.
