Thursday Thirteen 217: Recently Read

Here's what was read in July and August...

1. The Tales of Beadle the Bard. Borrowed from sister. A short, fast read that may be of interest to fans of the Harry Potter series.

2. Lilian Jackson Braun was the July featured author in the Cozy Mysteries group at Good Reads. I only managed to get through the first two of four books I have of hers, but they were pretty good mysteries. Fairly fast reads, at any rate, and I loved the mystery-solving cat, Koko.

3. If you sense a vampire theme, you would be correct, though I swear it was unintentional. It started as a desire to read a few books borrowed from a friend (Frost, Harris) so they could be returned. Then I won Dracula in Love from a blog contest and decided I wanted to (finally!) read Dracula before reading that one.

4. Summer in the South was another blog contest win, and pretty good. I read it in one weekend. Less than, actually.

5. One of the two Intrigues by Julie Miller was a gift from a friend, who sent me the two preceding books as well, as the trio was connected. The other related book was one I missed previously and lucked on to at the local UBS.

Eight of the above listed were featured in weekly Teaser Tuesday excerpts, which you can read here.

I enjoyed the two Frost books you listed. In fact, I like them slightly better than the Cat and Bones books.

Though I did like them, I had a little trouble getting into the "Night Huntress World" books, but I think it was only because I was so used to the 1st person POV of her "Night Huntress" series, the switch to 3rd POV threw me a bit.

I think I read maybe three books in all that time.

Terrific idea to list these. I love to read but haven't read those on your list. Happy TT.

I haven't read any of those! Looks like you've been busy.

Thanks for sharing your list! I did a video interview with Jeaniene Frost a few weeks ago and she was so nice. You can come by my site to watch the recording of it. Thanks again for all your comments on the books.

Wow! I'm a voracious reader too, and I'm also part of the 2011 Reading Challenge. :)

Are those "The Cat" books any good? I've never tried them myself.

Do stop by and say hi!

Alice: Yes, but you've been busy with the new house and that little vacation of yours.

Gel: I hope a couple have intrigued you enough to check them out!

Sidney: Little bit, LOL. And to be honest, after reading Dracula and Dracula in Love I felt like I had fallen behind in meeting my goal for the year. I've been trying to make up for lost time the last week or so. *G*

Caridad: Oh, cool! Am making a note to pop over your way and check out that interview. Thanks for visiting!

Cindy: Ah, a fellow GR challenge member! I love Jeaniene Frost's "Night Huntress" series (those are the ones featuring Cat and Bones). If you like vampires, give them a try!

the tea lover in me thought "Early Grave" said "Earl Gray." I wondering about a cat that can do all those things. I'm lucky if I read one book a month.

Those look really good!

I'm just now reading the "Death's Excellent Vacation". I like "The Cat..." series, too. Happy TT!

Cindy: Oops! I misunderstood your question about "the cat" books. Blame it on the fact there are two series here which feature a "cat" -- except in the Jeaniene Frost books, Cat is a half vampire, and in the Lilian Jackson Braun books the cat in question is a clever Siamese named Koko. Sorry! In any case, the "Cat Who" books are pretty good, too. There are a ton of them, though I have only read the two so far.

Heather said...

Colleen: Koko, the feline hero of the "Cat Who" books is quite the extraordinary cat. Not only can he "read backwards," one of his favorite games involves an old dictionary. Definitely a cat after my own heart, LOL.

Paige: There was definitely some good reading the last couple months. Dracula was by far the most challenging, but I am glad I took the time (and it took me more than a week!) to read it.

Darla: What do you think of Death's Excellent Vacation? Personally, there were only a few stories I really liked, a couple I hated, and a few that were just okay. Different tastes, I guess.

Haven't read Tales of Beadle the Bard. I'm jealous!

I haven't gotten around to reading The Tales of Beadle the Bard but I want to!

Heather said...

Hazel: Guess you're going to have to find a copy so you can catch up, eh? *g*

Janet: *Gasp* As big a HP fan as you are, and you havne't read The Tales of Beadle the Bard? I am...shocked! *g*

Usually, I love book list, today it just depressed me. But I'll get new books soon...maybe...at some point...

I've never read Bram Stoker's Dracula either. You've suggested my next read. Thanks!

Xakara: I can't afford new books right now, either, but luckily have a HUGE TBR pile. I also try to hit the library's used book sale first Saturday of every month when I can. I usually find at least one or two books I want for only 50 cents each.

Grandma Wren: I hope you enjoy Dracula if you decide to read it. It took me a little longer to get through it than most books, but I did like it, and was glad I read it before reading Dracula in Love.
