Teaser Tuesday 104: Alice in Wonderland

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few “teaser” sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

One of the November group reads for TNBCC at GoodReads is Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. I had great fun rereading this short classic, which I have read a few times previously, and loved that I could still remember some of the poetry. The following is from a scene in which Alice is playing croquet with The Duchess and The Queen of Hearts. I hope you enjoy this nonsensical selection!

"I quite agree with you," said the Duchess; "and the moral of that is—'Be what you would seem to be'—or, if you’d like it put more simply—'Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.'"
(The Duchess to Alice, chapter 9)

About the Book:
First published in 1865

Conceived by a shy British don on a golden afternoon to entertain ten-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have delighted generations of readers in more than eighty languages. "The clue to the enduring fascination and greatness of the Alice books," writes A. S. Byatt in her Introduction, "lies in language. . . . It is play, and word-play, and its endless intriguing puzzles continue to reveal themselves long after we have ceased to be children."

I reread this last year for a challenge...and at the same time, read Alice I Have Been.

I LOVED it even more as an adult, if that is possible.

Love the cover on your book.

Here's MY TT POST and

Jessica: Indeed! lol

Laurel-Rain: I think we are able to appreciate not just the story, but the wordplay more as adults. Definitely worth rereading!

Boriquaz: Exactly! : D

More simply? LOL.

You know, I've never actually read it from beginning to end.

I loved Alice in Wonderland the first time I read it and didn't like it at all the second time through years later. Don't know why.

I am one of the few people that have never read or watched a movie about "Alice...."

would you believe I've never read this book! Thanks for stopping by today. kaye—the road goes ever ever on

Alice: Yep, more simply, LOL. Can't beleive you've never read the entire work!

Fivealarm: No? I wonder why you felt so differently towards it years later?

Heather said...

Gigi Ann: No book or movie version? Wow, that is weird. I figured most people had at least seen one of the many movie versions.

Kaye: What, you too? Time to remedy that, I think! ;)

A classic book... great teaser.

I have never read this classic -- and I have no good excuse why.

That's some teaser! I think it was simpler the first time she said it. Don't remember ever reading this, but think I saw the movie. I know I liked the rabbit best who was in a hurry because he was late for something.

Thanks, Tania!

Alan: Well, at least you're honest--and still plenty of time to remedy that. ;)

Karen and Gerard: Definitely simpler the first way. I think I've seen the Disney animated, but most remember a made for TV mini-series from many years back. Have not seen the more recent theater version.
