Thursday Thirteen 222: Random Quotes

The other day I was flipping through some of my older journals, searching for something I never did find, when some of the random quotes jotted down caught my attention. I am constantly copying down quotes I run across, bits of TV dialogue, song lyrics or passages from books I am reading. I thought some of these might make for a good Thursday Thirteen, so here are a few of the random quotes from the journal dated Feb-April 2009. Enjoy!

"Sure you got the right place?" Kid asked.
"Dunno. I plugged 'crime scene' into MapQuest and this is what it spit out."

The problem is, there's no soundtrack for real life. In the movies, you know when something bad is going to happen, because the heavy bass tells you so. There isn't a person alive whose heart doesn't race upon hearing the theme song from JAWS, and frankly, that's a comforting thing. We like our markers. It gives the world a sense of order. Bad things may happen, but only after the background picks up with da-dah, da-dah, da-dah-da-dah-da-dah.

The real world isn't like that...

Life changes in an instant, with no soundtrack to be your guide.

Our heads are round so that thoughts can change direction.
~Francis Picobia, painter & poet

Life is not a reality show. Get one, and you'll see.
~Leonard Pitts Jr, writer

The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.
~Maureen Dowd, writer

Until we lose ourselves there is no hope of finding ourselves.
~Henry Miller, writer

The problem is we think we exist. We think our words are permanent and solid and stamp us forever. That's not true. We write in the moment.

(WRITING DOWN THE BONES by Natalie Goldberg)

As with most fine things, chocolate has its season. There is a simple memory aid that you can use to determine whether it is the correct time to order chocolate dishes: any month whose name contains the letter A, E, or U is the proper time for chocolate.
~Sandra Boynton

Fear impoverishes, while the acceptance of sorrow can enrich.

(SEDUCING HUNTER by Cathie Linz)

But what are we but our bad habits? They make us feel alive, don't they?
~Marilyn Harris

Half of our mistakes in life arise from feeling where we ought to think, and thinking where we ought to feel.
~John Churlton Collins

Monsters are real, and ghosts are real, too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.
~Stephen King

Sometimes tracking a thought is a futile pursuit.
~Me, to friend VSB, July 2000

What about you? Do you ever write down the words of others that inspire or speak to you at a particular moment?

Maybe I should but I forget and then I regret it. "Acceptance of sorrow can enrich" - I've noticed that to be true.

Enjoyed the list; am in substantial agreement with the "bad habits" quote.

Hazel: Wishing I'd written something down is one of the reasons I started copying stuff into my journals.

Right now I regret not jotting down a few keywords to jog my memory about the dream I woke from at 6am, before I fell back to sleep. Its contents are right on the edge of my brain, and I almost had it earlier tonight, but it slipped away again before I had it. Yeah...there's a reason I keep pen and paper on the stupid night stand! (grumble, grumble)

Ron: There are times bad habits should be indulged. They make the daily rut more bearable, don't they? *G*

The second quote reminds me of a simpler version I've heard and used "Life would be so much easier if you could hear the background music."

Great quotes!

I think I need to read that Lisa Gardener book. A great collection of quotes. I often scribble down lines from sitcoms.

Some great and thought provoking quotes, thanks very much. I particularly liked the settling for less one. Scary to read because I know I'm doing and am not currently brave enough to put a stop to it.

I too collect quotes but most of mine are from Star Trek.

"You may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. This is not logical, but it is often true." -- Spock (Amok Time)

I enjoyed reading your quotes.

Those are great quotes. I did quotes today, too. Must be something in the air.

Xakara: Long or short, life would definitely be easier at times with background music!

Anthony: Thank you, and thanks for stopping by!

Shelley: I love it when I happen upon a quote in my journals from a program (sitcom or drama), and I can remember the exact episode it was from. You might like the Lisa Gardner book. She writes good rom suspense!

Heather: It's easy to become settled in our daily ruts. Knowing we need to change things up is a start, but doesn't make it any easier to do.

Adelle: I love Lisa Gardner. I've read about half a dozen of her books, with a few more in the TBR pile to catch up. Too many great authors, so little time...

Caridad: Thank you, I'm glad you liked!

Susan: I can honestly say that none of my quotes are from Star Trek. Definitely not a fan, though I do like your Spock quote.

Anita: LOL...it must be something in the air, since Hazel did quotes (of a sort) too. *G*

These are great! I copied a few. I also thing our heads are round causing our thoughts to go round and round!

Love all these...especially the one about chocolate. ;-)

And your own quote there at the end is absolutely true!

Colleen: Thanks, I'm glad you liked.

Jana: LOL, I should have known you'd glom onto the chocolate one. Thanks also for liking my quote to Vi. *VBG*

Great selection of quotes, from funny to serious.

The Stephen King line is one I recall, too. I always felt it was something any writer would do well to remember. Not just horror writers, either, but any kind of writer. The ghosts and monsters within us sometimes have undue influence over our decisions - they're what we have to fight against, and so should our characters.

Thanks for sharing all of these!

Happy TT!

Hi JD, stragglers are always welcome. Hide was a good book. Lisa Gardner is an author I came to late, and whose backlist I am still trying to catch up on. Thanks for stopping by!
