Teaser Tuesday 127: The Lincoln Lawyer

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few “teaser” sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week I am reading The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly, book one in his Mickey Haller series. This is my first book by Connelly, a loaner from my sister, and I am enjoying the ride so far. Though I have not yet seen the movie, just knowing it stars Matthew McConaughey has me hearing his voice—not necessarily a bad thing—during the first-person narrative passages. His slow, southern drawl seems well-suited to the slick lead character of the book. I am about halfway through, but here is a short paragraph from near the end of chapter three.

No hesitation in what I had done or said. That was my job. That was how it worked. After fifteen years of practicing law I had come to think of it in very simple terms. The law was a large, rusting machine that sucked up people and lives and money. I was just a mechanic. I had become expert at going into the machine and fixing things and extracting what I needed from it in return.

(pg 30)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Mickey Haller series (Book one of four)

For defense attorney Mickey Haller, the clock is always running. With two ex-wives, four Lincoln Town Cars that he uses as offices, and dozens of guilty clients, he can’t afford to miss a trick. When he gets picked by a Beverly Hills rich boy arrested for assault, Mickey sees a franchise case: a nice, long, expensive trial with maximum billable hours—until it hurtles him into the last place he wants to be. Suddenly hustling, cynical Mickey Haller is confronted with pure evil and someone who may be truly innocent. Now, for a lawyer who has always gone for the easy score, getting justice means taking the deadliest risk of all.

That's a pretty good description of the legal system.

Alice: Sad, but true--no?

Shelley: Me too. Cynical and sad, but true.

I've heard a lot of good things about this author--and this book. I like to cast the characters in books I'm reading with Hollywood actors, especially if they look like Matthew McConaughey!
Here's my teaser: http://iousex.blogspot.com/

Sandy: I've heard a lot about this author, too, and am glad I've finally given him a try. Will definitely pick up more in the future.

Thanks, Kathy! I do hope the rest fo the book is as good as it has been so far. It's certainly been a much faster read than my previous book!

Thanks Beth, Kaye and Janet Ruth. I came close to finishing it last night -- would have stayed up until I had, were it not for the fact I had to get up early for work -- but did manage to get in those last couple chapters before work today. Must find book two! *g*
