Thursday Thirteen 246: Earth Day Edition

Welcome to Thursday Thirteen, Earth Day Edition!

Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22. It was established in 1970, by a US Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson. The idea came to Sen. Nelson after witnessing the devastation following a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA in 1969. More than 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy environment that first Earth Day, with thousands of organized protests taking part at colleges and universities.

In 1990, Earth Day went global, with more than 200 million people participating in 141 countries, and an emphasis on recycling. In 1995, President Bill Clinton awarded Senator Nelson the Presidential Medal of freedom--the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian in the US.

This Earth Day, let us be reminded of the beauty that surrounds us, and remember that it is up to all of us to sustain a healthy environment.

All photos by me. Find more Thursday Thirteen participants here.

Perfect for WW!

Lovely flowers! Do you know what they all are?

Heather said...

Novroz: Thank you. I take it you either currently have no camera, or nothing is blooming near you?

HansHB: Thank you, though this post is actually Thursday Thirteen, the one below this is WW. ;)

Anita: Thank you! I do know what most of them are. Violet, tulips, daffodils, magnolia, quince, and white and red crabapple. The one glaring exception is that cluster of purple flowers. They were blooming at base of a tree outside a building I pass on my walks.

Oh, and lilac. The unknown purple flowers are a few pics below that.

"For the beauty of the earth" immediately played in my head as I read your post, enjoyed your flower photos. You have just given me a lovely idea for my post tomorrow (which I planned to skip). Advance happy Earth Day.

I have that same yellow/pink tulip. It has lasted 5 times longer than the other plain ones. I use to have more of them but now only have the one.

Happy Earth Day! Your flowers are lovely!

Hazel: Thank you, I'm glad you like, and that my flowers have inspired you.

Colleen: I love those yellow/pink tulips. There are a lot of them in the small hosta beds in front of the buildings in my apartment complex. Well, except my building. Nothing grows in the flower bed by my building because a certain evil dog owner won't keep her dogs out of it--like there isn't enough grass for them to ruin...

Earth day and all I can do is drool over your flowers. It's 38 degrees out there right now.

Heather said...

Alice: Not much growing in your area yet I take it? We've had a few nights down around freezing the last two weeks, but days are still warming into 50s and 60s. Rain today and last I checked 46F (41 with windchill), but warming to mid-50s again.

Love all the floral pics, Trix!

I try to do my part for the planet. I've really gotten into recycling. It's to the point where, if possible, when I'm out somewhere and use something (drink cups, plastic containers, cans, etc) that can be recycled, I always weigh the odds of difficulting in carting it home to drop in the recycle box vs. tossing it in the garbage. My friends all think I'm weird when they catch me carting a used and empty container home. :-/

Thanks, forgetfulone! I really liked how those begonies turned out myself. *g*

Harriet: Thank you. Hope you're not allergic. ;)

Jana: Thank you, and yay you for doing your part for the planet! I alos recycle, and it really irritates me when I catch neighbors throwing garbage in the recycling bin, or when lazy people throw garbage along the side of the road instead of disposing of it when they reach their destination. The world is not one great big garbage dump!

Rekaya: *Blush* Thank you for the compliment! I love photographing nature. It's usually much more cooperative and restorative than working with people. *g*
