Teaser Tuesday 137: Eden Burning

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few “teaser” sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

I plucked a slightly older book off Mount TBR over the weekend, Eden Burning by Elizabeth Lowell. I am about a quarter of the way through thus far, and while I like the setting (Hawaii) and the heroine well enough, I can't say the same for the hero—at least so far. I don't care if he is a reknowned vulcanologist, he'd better start redeeming himself soon. Here's a teaser from early on in the book.

The drumbeat increased yet again, a god calling to a taunting goddess. Her answer was an incandescent shimmer of motion and color, a woman on fire with the sensual demands of the drums. (pg 56)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Genre: Romance

A man of science, Chase Wilcox is drawn to the lush beauty of the island of Hawaii and the secrets it holds—while escaping the destruction of his own personal world. Here, where vibrant colors assault the senses—and perilous fires rage unseen beneath the surface—ha plans to immerse himself in his work . . . and somehow heal and forget.

A research assistant, an artist, and a dancer, Nicole Ballard also hides a secret pain. Joining Chase on an important scientific project in the verdant heart of a tropical wonderland, they both will be forced to confront their own lingering inner darkness. But in the shadows of Mount Kilauea, a passion that burns like fire will erupt, as unpredictable and dangerous as the living volcano, transforming the very landscape of their lives.

MaryEllen: Glad to have caught your attention. I'm hoping I like the hero better by the time I hit the end, but he was an absolute ass again in the last scene I read. Sigh... Men! lol

Beth: Hehe...thanks. Can't say he has become any more charming since last night, and I don't think I've ever felt this strongly about one of Lowell's heroes before.

Jessica: Thanks...I think? *g*

Shelley: I really like the setting and unique career for the hero. If nothing else I am learning a lot about Hawaii's volcanoes, and how they differ from others around the world.

Heather said...

Hi Nash! The volcano aspect of this book is definitely interesting, and reading about it is probably the closest I will ever get to visiting Hawaii.

Gautami: Happy to have intrigued you! :)

I've been a long time fan of Elizabeth Lowell. Enjoy

Dalene: I've read many books by Elizabeth Lowell--including her most recent, Beautiful Sacrifice--and always enjoyed them, but this one... Love the setting, not loving the hero. :-/

Tribute: Most welcome. Thanks for visiting! :)

Here's MY TUESDAY MEMES POST

Heather said...

Nise': Thanks! I have long been a fan as well, though I have fallen behind on more recent books.

Laurel-Rain: There are many such lyrical and sensual passages in this book, which is one of the things that keeps me reading. She is certainly skilled at writing description!

Reads a but flowery for my taste, but I'll bet if I were reading the book I'd run right over this without really noticing.

So, is the hero a jackass? Seems like in Romance there are a lot of them, the idea being the heroine will reform them. Problem is sometimes the reform step doesn't work.

Heather said...

Alice: The hero was definitely a bit of a jerk the first half of the novel. He's only just realized what an ass he's been, and what it might have cost him.

Thanks, Jessica!

Kaye: I am now at the midpoint of the book and so far it's a solid 3 out of 5 stars. I like the volcano aspect of it, and currently am enjoying seeing the hero squirm. Hehe...
