Teaser Tuesday 138: Eggs in Purgatory

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

As I write this post, I am only about 60 pages (21%) into Eggs in Purgatory by Laura Childs, the first in her "Cackleberry Club" mystery series. The following teaser is from page 42:

"Hello?" she called out, suddenly unsure. There were no streetlights out here, and the summer darkness seemed thick and oppressive.

There was a dull click and then, like some terrible, mechanized mosquito, a bullet whined past her left ear.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
1. Eggs in Purgatory
2. Eggs Benedict Arnold
3. Bedeviled Eggs
4. Stake and Eggs

Suzanne, Toni and Petra lost their husbands but found independence—and, in each other, a life raft of support, inspiration, fresh baked goods, and their own business. But when the Cackleberry Club cafĂ© opened its doors in the town of Kindred, who’d have guessed that the cozy oasis would become the scene of a crime?

Suzanne’s lawyer is found in his car behind the Cackleberry with egg on his face and blood on the dash. Suzanne’s taking the crime personally: The murder reveals a scandal in her late husband’s past and brings a stranger fleeing a messianic sect to her for help. Now, discovering the link between a dead man with secrets and a runaway cultist may be putting Suzanne’s own life on the line.

That would be a little startling. I'll have to add this series to my wishlist. I have been reading lots of mysteries and thrillers lately. My teasers are from The Line Between Here and Gone by Andrea Kane and Storm by Brigid Kemmerer. Happy reading!

Laurel-Rain: I have not made much progress in it, but so far it's not bad.

Kathy: Definitely startling. I tend to switch back and forth between mystery/thriller and other genres such as romance or classics. Can't read a steady diet of one genre or I grow tired of it. ;)

Very unusual book title and teaser, great snippet!

Thanks for visiting my TT earlier today.

Alice: I liked that line, too. :)

Gautami: Thank you!

Janet Ruth: Yes, a lot of cozy mystery titles play on words like that. Eggs in Purgatory is also, apparently, a dish served at the cafe in this book--there's even a recipe at the end.

Sally: Thanks, Sally!

Dalene: I don't know if I will continue the series after this one, but I know people at GoodReads who absolutely love it.

Jennifer: That would be the question that both the heroine and I want to know! *g*

Just a bit scary ... Added to my TBR-list, though.

Check out my TT Post

Demitra: Love that you added it despite this scary scene. Vicarious thrills are one of the best things about mysteries and thrillers, wouldn't you say? *G*
