Thursday Thirteen 254: Moving Edition

In case you have not heard, I will be moving this weekend―Sunday afternoon, to be exact. I expect my arms, back and neck to be cursing me for several days after. Here are a few pros and cons of moving.

1. PRO — Only a few blocks from where I am now. Plus, fresh paint and new flooring throughout.

2. PRO — Same polling place, bus routes, and neighborhood I am used to walking—not to mention knowing where all the (good) restaurants are. Not that I get to eat out much.

3. CON — I am, however, a little further from the Grady Tract of the Arboretum.

4. PRO — But…my new street backs up to a bike path and there is a new SE entrance to Grady Tract off that. They are supposed to be building a highway overpass next summer to extend the path, and hopefully that will also mean another entrance to the main body of the Arboretum.

5. PRO — Only four apartments in the building as opposed to twenty-four, which should translate to less noise. I hope. It was pretty quiet the night I looked at it.

6. CON — While the new apartment overall isn’t much smaller than the old apartment and has plenty of closet space, the kitchen may be my least favorite room. For starters, it has an electric stove as opposed to gas, and it is much smaller. Also, no dishwasher. Not that I am prone to leaving heaps of dishes piled in the sink, but that could still take some getting used to.

7. PRO — Though I will have an upstairs neighbor to contend with, I will share no walls. A hallway separates me from my next door neighbor.

8. CON — Being tired of living under inconsiderate people for twenty years, I was hoping to find an upstairs apartment, but—alas!—it was not to be. Better luck next time, right?

9. CON — Having to pack and unpack everything, not to mention moving on a day when the temp will be pushing 90F. Yes, I know—at least it won’t be over 100. :-\

10. PRO — Rent is a bit less than where I am now.

11. CON — No swimming pool or fitness center, but I haven’t used the pool in years (too many screaming kids) and have never used the fitness center (it was two blocks away from me, which did not make it appealing in the cold of winter).

12. PRO — I am across the street from where a friend lives. A friend with a teenage boy strong enough to do any heavy lifting that may be required.

13. CON — making all the address changes. Okay, some of these have been relatively quick and painless to do, while others…why do some companies’ websites make you jump through hoops to do the simplest of tasks? AT&T’s site definitely wins the award for most user UN-friendly, and I have to do it online in order to take advantage of a special offer.

Not sure when I will be back online at home next week, but will try to schedule a few posts in advance, or post from work.

Good luck with the move.

You found a lease that didn't involve August 15th? I'm amazed. When we lived there, we moved every year on August 15th in search of a livable place.

I hope everything goes smoothly during your move. It's not my favorite thing to do!

Best of luck with moving... not a fun thing.

Good luck! I know you've been wanting to get out of your old place for a while.

Good luck with the move! I'd tell you enjoy it, but let's face it, the actual moving process s seldom fun. Still, I think it's great that you won't be sharing walls anymore.

Yay! So glad you finally found someplace nice and can now get out from under that helacious management (and neighbors!) you've been enduring for so long. Here's to praying that this living situation far exceeds your hopes. :)

Wish I could help with moving. Hope everything goes well and smoothly. (((hugs)))

JourneyWoman: Thank you!

Alice: Yes, it can be done--especially if you avoid the downtown area. I'd like to know when that Aug 15 thing started anyway. I mean, I get that it coincides with when most uni students return to town, but still... Why can't they move at the beginning of the month like everyone else?

Shelley: Thank you. Not a fa of the process, either--which is probably why I've put it off so long.

Tania: Thank you!

Anita: Thanks, and yes I have. The new building is privately owned and isn't in a large, impersonal complex, so hopefully it will make a difference. The couple who own it say they are there at least once a week cleaning the common areas and doing general maintenance.

Gal Herself: Thanks, I like the fact I won't be sharing walls, but it remains to be seen what upstairs neighbors are like. Hopefully quiet and seldom there like my current upstairs neighbor, lol.

Jana: At least, I assume that's you, LOL. Thanks, I'm hoping for a smooth transition, too. I am also hoping to unearth a few items I've recently wanted and have no idea where they've gone. Like the adding machine and three-hole punch. And my hand-held Scrabble game. That's been missing for ages.

Sandy: Thank you, I hope there will be a bit of peace in the coming months, in all its myriad forms. :)

Not playing the 13s this week myself (planning a blockbuster for next week, though) but I enjoyed yours very much. I hate relocating, would have trouble coming up with any "pro"s.

Jana said...

Yeah, that was me. Blogger hates me again, apparently.

Let's just hope you don't LOSE more stuff in the move. There are a handful of things I haven't found since my last move three years ago. *sigh*

Ron: Thank you. I guess it was easy coming up with a few pros for this move, considering how unhappy I've been of late with management (or lack thereof). Thanks for commenting!

Jana: The only way that is likely to happen is if my sister tries to serreptitiously abscond with a couple boxes of books and leave them at Goodwill on her way out of town. I think she knows better than that. I do want to sort and weedout the library as I unpack, but I'd rather decide what goes and what stays myself, then donate to the library used book sale. ;)

Good luck to you on your big move!

Have a great T-13!

I like the idea of quiet and the bike path but I personally would miss the pool. Goo luck!

Heather said...

Harriet: Thank you, and thanks for visiting!

Colleen: I love water and did use the pool for the first few years I lived here, but there weren't as many kids in the complex at that time. Kids under age 18 are supposed to be supervised by an adult age 21 or older, but rarely are. Which means a lot of screaming, splashing and diving (which they aren't supposed to do) and other negative behavior -- an environment that is not at all relaxing to me. I do hope the proximity of the bike path inspires me to get my bike out more often.

I hope your move goes smoothly, and all the pros make up in spades for the cons! (And your upstairs neighbors more considerate than the last ones!)

Yvonne said...

Good luck with the move. I don't envy you! All that packing and unpacking...not my favorite thing.

Jana said...

Sister better not abscond with any books! ;-)

Love the new profile pic, BTW. You look so cute and mischevious. And... BOOKS!!:-D

Heather said...

Sherilee: Thank you. I do hope my new upstairs neighbors will be decent. The guy currently living above me at the old place is fairly quiet and often gone for a week at a time. Before him? Two guys who were extremely inconsiderate.

Heather said...

Yvonne: I do not look forward to unpacking, much as I want everything out of their boxes. That could be a month-long process, LOL.

Jana: You tell her, lol! And thanks--I thought maybe I should have something more appropriate to summer (ie: not a sweatshirt), and liked the idea of books in the background. Had the Dickens of a time getting a pic I liked.
