Teaser Tuesday 141: Little Women

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

For some unknown reason, three of the groups in which I participate at GoodReads have chosen Little Women by Louisa May Alcott as a group read some time during the past year. I wasn’t planning to reread it, but then I happened upon a copy in fairly decent condition on the $1 clearance rack at Half Price Books and figured why not?

"Dear me, I didn't know anyone was here!" stammered Jo, preparing to back out as speedily as she had bounced in.

But the boy laughed and said pleasantly, though he looked a little startled, "Don’t mind me, stay if you like."

(Chapter 3)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
(For those unfamiliar with this classic children’s book)

Little Women is an American classic, adored for Louisa May Alcott's lively and vivid portraits of the endearing March sisters: talented tomboy Jo, pretty Meg, shy Beth, temperamental Amy. Millions have shared in their joys, hardships, and adventures as they grow up in Civil War New England, separated by the war from their father and beloved mother, "Marmee," blossoming from "little women" into adults. Jo searches for her writer's voice and finds unexpected love. . .Meg prepares for marriage and a family. . .Beth reaches out to the less fortunate, tragically. . .and Amy travels to Europe to become a painter. Based on Louisa May Alcott's own Yankee childhood, "Little Women" is a treasure—a story whose enduring values of patience, loyalty, and love have kept this extraordinary family close to the hearts of generation after generation of delighted readers.

Great post! Jo is my favorite LITTLE WOMEN character -- I always think of June Allyson in the old movie.
My teaser this week is from LIES THAT BIND by Delinda McCann.

I haven't read Little Women in years! It's probably time for a reread :) Here's my teaser: The Gray Wolf Throne

I've never actually read it. I've read parts of it, though. Not on purpose, just people keep bringing it up. You know something is a classic when that happens.

Sandy: To be honest, it's been so long that I don't remember a lot about either the book or any of the movie versions. I might have to lay hands on a movie version soon as comparison.

NovelTease: If it's been as long for you as it has been for me, by all means dust off that cover and start rereading! ;)

Alice: Never? Wow, you and my friend Latesha would get on well together. She was just telling me she has never read it, either. *Shakes head sadly*

An excellent teaser from a wonderful book!! Alcott is probably most famous for Little Women, but my favorite Alcott books are Eight Cousins and its sequel Rose in Bloom which I highly recommend.

Here is my teaser for this week.

Ah, it's Jo's meeting with Laurie! I love Little Women. I read it several times as a child, and then a couple of years ago, read it again. I felt as though I had memorized much of the dialogue. It felt so cozy.

Thanks for reminding me!

Here's MY TUESDAY MEMES POST

One of these days I'll get around to reading this one. I've seen the various movies but I'm sure the book is much better.

My Tuesday Teaser is here.

A favorite. Great choice! And in a year when women's rights are under fire, a great choice for book clubs everywhere.

Beth: Thanks for the recommendations. The only other work of hers I know I have read is A Long Fatal Love Chase.

Shelley: No? What was it you did not like about the story?

Some teasers are so good that those take one into another world. This one is one of those teasers!!

Here is my Tuesday post!

Heather said...

Yvonne: Thanks, it's been a long time since I've read it, too.

Cathy: Wow, another person who hasn't read it. There seem to be more adn more of you!

Heather said...

Laurel-Rain: Yay! Someone who not only knows the characters, but recognizes the scene.

Irish: No time like the present! You can find free copies at: Project Gutenberg or Amazon.

Heather said...

Anita: I hadn't thought about it in terms of women's rights, but I suppose there is some correlation there.

Gautami: Glad to have transported you into another age and world. *g*

Wonderful teaser! I loved this book so much when I was a little girl. I totally identified with Jo, but always really wanted to be Amy! Might be time for a re-read.

Wow, it has been decades since I read this one, great flashback!

Thanks for stopping by my TT earlier today.

Heather said...

Leigh Ann: Wow, another who has not read it. Interesting.

Joy: I think I identified most with Jo as well. Not so much the wild and unruly tomboy aspect, but the voracious reader/writer that she was. I was always most content to be off on my own with a book!

Janet Ruth: Glad you enjoyed the flashback! *G*
