Thursday Thirteen 257: Beloit Mindset List 2012

Beloit College has released their annual "mindset" list. The class of 2016 was born in 1994. Here is a peek at some of the 75 items on the list:

-- They have always lived in cyberspace, addicted to a new generation of "electronic narcotics."

-- Michael Jackson’s family, not the Kennedys, constitutes "American Royalty."

-- They have never seen an airplane "ticket."

-- For most of their lives, maintaining relations between the U.S. and the rest of the world has been a woman’s job in the State Department.

-- Their folks have never gazed with pride on a new set of bound encyclopedias on the bookshelf.

-- The Green Bay Packers have always celebrated with the Lambeau Leap. (I did not add this one—it really is on the list!)

-- A significant percentage of them will enter college already displaying some hearing loss.

-- Women have always piloted war planes and space shuttles.

-- Having made the acquaintance of Furby at an early age, they have expected their toy friends to do ever more unpredictable things.

-- Outdated icons with images of floppy discs for "save," a telephone for "phone," and a snail mail envelope for "mail" have oddly decorated their tablets and smart phone screens.

-- Star Wars has always been just a film, not a defense strategy.

-- Gene therapy has always been an available treatment.

-- The Twilight Zone involves vampires, not Rod Serling.

Ah, heck—here are a few more, just for fun:

-- They watch television everywhere but on a television.

-- Point-and-shoot cameras are soooooo last millennium.

-- Despite being preferred urban gathering places, two-thirds of the independent bookstores in the United States have closed for good during their lifetimes.

-- Genomes of living things have always been sequenced.

Great. As if, approaching 62, I wasn't already feeling ancient. Thanks a bunch.

You have to laugh when reading something like this. Every generation changes so much.

Ha! These are great. How things change.

It does make you feel your age! Yikes.

Ron: Sorry about that. *VBG*

Shelley: It feels like there are wider gaps between the generations these days, especially where technolgy is concerned.

Heather said...

Brenda: The times are definitely a'changin - faster and faster it seems.

Anita: Doesn't it? The problem with the technology addiction plaguing today's kids is that they have no idea how to entertain themselves when the power goes out. Boardgames? Books? What are those?

gene therapy and cord blood interest me - wish I had them or knew earlier in my treatments - future I'm sure

Sandy: It's definitely the wave of the future. Now, if they could only engineer a way to end drought!

Point and shoot are not gone. Only now they are called "digital." :)

A lot of this sounds like Greek to me. I'm so far out of touch. lol

Freshmen make me tired, though. All that enthusiasm. I like the upper classman and graduate students a lot better. They all have that beat down yet crazed look in their eyes. AND the boys jog around without their shirts on all summer/fall. Makes it worth my while to come to work. ;-)

Alice: Technically true. Not to mention the fact most cell phones now come with a point and shoot camera function.

Jana: ROFL... Don't feel so bad--there were a couple items on this list I wasn't sure of. And yes, freshmen can be exhausting. Give 'em a month until reality sets in. ;-)

A new breed indeed. Are cell phone cameraa really taking the place of point and shoot cameras? Are they that good?

I'm glad about the Star Wars one.

Makes me feel old! My youngest, my twins, were born in 1996. They only have 2 years of high school left, and I guess they fit into this category.

Harriet: Glad I reminded you of something you wanted to check out!

Colleen: Some cell phones are better than others. The one my sister has takes pretty good pics, but some - like the one Alicce bought - do not.

Forgetfulone: You'll have to remember to check the list in two years to see what it says about your twins. ;)

Rekaya: Sorry 'bout that! :D
