Thursday Thirteen 277: Random

Yes, I'm doing more questions lifted from Sunday Stealing this week. My brain is too tired to think of anything original.

01. First Job: Babysitting. Big surprise, right?

02. First Record: I can’t think of a specific title, but we had numerous Disney records as kids.

03. First Sport Played: T-ball, summer between second and third grades. Never played it again.

04. First Concert: First played in, or first attended? Because there were a lot of orchestra concerts grades 4 through 11. First non-school concert attended was Billy Joel at Alpine Valley.

05. First Country Visited: Norway—I was an exchange student while in high school.

06. First Speech: The first speech I remember was in 4th grade, on national parks in Colorado. In grade 5 there was a report on Germany, one on Iowa (we all had to choose a different state; Iowa was not my first choice), and a group one on the Pueblo Indians (we had to present these to the entire school).

07. First Encounter with a Famous Person: The mayor (I think it was the major, though it could have been the governor—I'm not feeling inclined to search for the class photo I have to verify) visited my fourth grade classroom, and I had regular contact in high school with local YA author Jocelyn Riley—she was active in local schools, and even led a writer’s club for a year at my high school.

08. First Brush With Death: Nearly falling off Pikes Peak when I was 5. It was snowing and slippery. The quick reflexes of an older sister saved me.

09. First House/Flat Owned: Have never owned a house or condo, just rent an apartment. What I wouldn't give for a sound-proof condo!

10. First Film Seen at a Cinema: It was a Disney film, either Bambi, Dumbo or Sleeping Beauty . . . I saw them all before kindergarten, I just don’t know in which order.

11. First Media Appearance (Radio, Newspaper, TV): Grade school. My photo was in the local paper when I was in third grade for winning a bike in a bike safety contest.

12. First Book You Remember Reading: There are three I remember: Why Can’t I Fly?, My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes, and Sophie and Gussie—all purchased through the Weekly Reader catalog (anyone else remember those?).

13. First Pet: We had a lot of cats and dogs growing up. The first I really remember is Duchess, a German shepherd.

My first job was babysitting too. I even took a class in it and got certified first. I didn't last long, though.

My first job was delivering newspapers both morning and night. I think I was about 10. My family were newsagents.

This was the first thing I read today; I enjoyed it very much.

I don't know if I could remember all my firsts. Great TT!!!

Wow - I'm definitely swiping this one for next week. LOL!

You know what? I'm not sure what the first film was I saw in a theater. I'm going to have to ponder that.

Happy TT! :)

Wow, interesting. I'm glad your sister caught you on Pikes Peak and this was a great post idea to steal. I might have to follow your example.

first movie 1954's Saskachewan with Alan Ladd. First music concert? Wilf Carter. I was retro from birth.

Alice: I had regular clients through about sophomore year of HS and, with one exception, they were always icky boys, lol.

Heather said...

Anthony: It's funny how times change. Delivering newspapers used to be a job for school boys with bicycles, now it's a job for adults with cars.

Aw, shucks... Thanks Ron! : D

Thanks, Jennifer: The original meme was twenty questions. There were a few I couldn't answer, so automatically deleted those, then had to pare it down by a couple to get to thirteen.

Heather said...

Kimberly: LOL...swipe away! I don't know why I remember seeing those three movies in the theater, maybe because they were all Disney animated films, and I was at the right age for their rereleases.

The first non-animated film I remember seeing in a theater was The Gnome-Mobile, also a Disney film.

Thanks, Mia -- I'm glad she caught me, too. This incident came up in conversation about a decade back, and she was surprised to hear that I actually remembered it. It's why I am not so much afraid of heights as I am high ledges.

Heather said...

Thanks, Paige. Feel free to steal it. *G*

Heather said...

Colleen: Being flooded so bad you had to be rescued by Coast Guard boats must have been a scary expeience, especially if you were really young at the time.

Heather said...

Pearl: I can honestly say I do not know either of those, though the movie sounds like something my dad would have liked.

stealing this I love to nostalge and try to remember like my not a words??

Pearl said...

It was one my parents liked in their youth. They took me to see it as a kid.

Thanks for your point on thicker books. I've clarified what that meant. It is about not the quality of the book but how thin books get lost in history and tomes are more likely to have more copies of a print run survive.

My brain is so fried from doing revisions that I doubt I could remember any of my firsts. LOL. I can't wait to visit another country someday - hopefully Italy. :)

Heather said...

Sandyland: Glad to inspire you. Have fun with the meme!

Heather said...

Pearl: I see, your point, but do not concede it. Many authors, including Jane Austen and even Dostoevsky, wrote "thinner" books that have survived 150 years or more. I think it's not about quantity of pages, but quality of writing overall.

Stephanie: I would love to be able to travel again, especially overseas. There are a great many countries I'd love to visit, as well as a couple I'd like to revisit.

Very cool list :)

My first job was chicken coop cleaner. I lived on a farm.

That story about nearly falling from Pikes Peak was something. Glad your sister was paying attention!

Somehow I have a vague memory of T-ball and playing it once and only once in my life.

Heather said...

Julie: Thank you!

Heather said...

Anita: Yes, that little tidbit certainly makes for interesting conversation. I haven't been back there since I was 6 or 7.

Heather said...

Hazel: So far as I know, only one other person, one of my nieces, has played t-ball, and I think she only played it for one summer, too.

Rekaya Gibson said...

You are good. I couldn't remember most of these. This might be a start to your memoir. Thanks for sharing.

The Food Temptress

Heather said...

Rekaya: Thanks. I'm always astonishing friends with the seemingly unimportant details I remember, LOL.

Alice Audrey said...

Well, of course it's icky boys who need watching the most and whom the parents need the most time away from.

Heather said...

Uh-huh! Those were the years I started to get into old movies. After the boys went to bed, there usually wasn't anything good on except for the movie channels, and a lot of times they were old B&W films. So, I'd either read or watch an old classic.
