Teaser Tuesday 189: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

Finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky over the weekend for a September group read at Goodreads. Definitely not a feel-good book, but a good one nonetheless. The narrative is told in a series of letters, each chapter being another letter--some short, some long. Here is a teaser from this YA novel.

When we got out of the tunnel, Sam screamed this really fun scream, and there is was. Downtown. Lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder. Sam sat down and started laughing. Patrick started laughing. I started laughing.

And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.

(Chapter: October 28)

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Charlie is a freshman.

And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it.

Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But he can't stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

Like this choice. I haven't read it yet, but like the teaser. I've been avoiding the movie in case I read the book.

I like the scream. Sounds like a fun read.

There were a few funny scenes, but also alot of teenage angst. Of course, as we find out at the end, there was a legitimate underlying reason for some of Charlie's problems.

Andrea: The entire last sentence? Your friend must really like the book. ☺
