Teaser Tuesday 190: The Lost Hero

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week I am teasing The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, the first book in his Heroes of Olympus series. I read the bulk of this one over the weekend and finished it last night. I enjoyed it as much as the Percy Jackson series.

The dragon stared at Leo. Its face didn’t actually change, being made of metal and all, but Leo thought he could read its expression: Why no crispy critter? A spark flew out of its neck like it was about to short-circuit.

(Chapter XII)

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Jason has a problem. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for "bad kids." What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly?

Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out.

Leo has a way with tools. When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god.

Kelley:Riordan's books are really good -- great adventures, no matter what your age! A friend's son and I had fun discussing the differences between the book and movie versions of "Lightning Thief" this summer. I'm thinking he might like this one for Christmas.

Alice: It was a fun read. There were a few scenes that had me laughing out loud -- on the bus, no less. Totally loved the dragon, too! ☺

Thanks, Beth -- and thanks for visiting!

Hi Valentina! It was indeed a fun read. I'm hoping to get book three from my sister, next time I see her.

Hmm, interesting. I love that his stuff is inspired by greek mythology, I really should read more of his stuff.

This sounds fun! I went to see the second Percy Jackson film a few weekends ago and loved it - but I'm not sure they can do his books justice on film because RR's humour is just too good to be abbreviated. lol.

Greg: I love the mythical aspect of his books as well. This series is interesting as it combines Greek mythology with its Roman counterpart.

Hi Annie! I haven't seen Sea of Monsters yet, though I would like to. Hopefully I'm not as disappointed in it as I was The Lightning Thief. I loved that my young friend's elementary school teacher used it as a learning tool -- first the class read the book, then watched the film and wrote about the differences between the two.

A metal dragon? That sounds interesting!
My Teaser is from a YA fantasy too - SMOKE, WINGS & STONE.

I haven't read this author, yet, but this does sound really tempting. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

Sandra: Yes, Festus is made of copper and bronze, with glowing red ruby eyes. He's quite the companion on the heroes' quest.

Thanks for visiting, Andrea!

Thanks, Laurel-Rain -- Riordan definitely knows how to craft an adventure story. I know there are people who don't care about reading series in order, but I do suggest starting with The Lightning Thief and rest of that series, as there are characters and events referenced in this book.
