Then, miracle of miracles, after weeks in the deep freeze, we had three consecutive days this week in the low 40s (F). This time of year, that becomes both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is it's actually above freezing and some of the snow melts. The curse is that that daytime snow-melt freezes at night, making for slippery roads, and erodes streets until there are potholes big enough to swallow a bus.
And then Thursday we were "blessed" with a winter mix. It started in the wee hours of the morning as light snow, then changed over to rain and drizzle that fell throughout the day. It was dreary and overcast, and just when you thought the sky couldn't possibly get any darker, it did just that shortly after 3pm. At 3:30pm I heard a loud crash of thunder as the sky opened up and it rained in earnest. And then . . . what did I hear to add to the fun?
Yup, that is hail. HAIL! In February. Thankfully, the pellets were small and it only lasted about five minutes. Before the system moved out of the area Friday morning, it had changed back over to snow. Nothing heavy or measurable like the foot or more Northern Wisconsin saw today, but enough to cause dangerous driving conditions when combined with heavy winds gusting at 50 to 70 mph. Many outlying schools were delayed or cancelled this morning. You kno it's bad when the winds are strong enough to tip over a school bus (not that it did, just that it could).
And this is what I had to traverse when leaving for work Friday morning. That is solid ice. Couldn't cut through the yard due to knee-deep snow, so had no choice but to walk slowly and carefully across that smooth and slippery surface. Thankfully, a combination of salt and direct sun had melted the ice floe by the time I got home. Now we're back below freezing, and heading down near the zero mark again by next Thursday.
Sigh . . . shouldn't it be spring already?!

we're about the same here, except that it's been so dry up until this month that I'm still grateful to see the white stuff.
I'd say you're welcome to some of ours, but after two consecutive summers of drought conditions, we really do need moisture in any form. I'm just tired of the extreme cold.
Sounds about right. We're in some wacky weather patterns now, too. Admittedly, not quite as dramatic as yours. haha
Hope it warms up and stays warmer soon.
Jana: Alas, it is not warming up again anytime soon, as those rude neighbors to our north are sending us more of their polar air. Below freezing temps, even down below zero at times, through next week. :-\
Seriously, they need to keep their polar junk to themselves. lol
We had some spring-like weather last week but this week it's cold again. Not as cold as ya'll, but cold enough for us. ;-)
We had a couple days in low 40s last week, but it's hard to enjoy that taste of spring when you're working all day. Naturally it was COLD again by the weekend.
