Teaser Tuesday 253: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jenn of  A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week’s teaser comes from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, a short classic work of fiction. Like many classics that have become a part of mainstream culture, I thought it was good, though not quite what I expected. It is available for free at Project Gutenberg.

All at once, I saw two figures: one a little man who was stumbling along eastward at a good walk, and the other a girl of maybe eight or ten who was running as hard as she was able down a cross street. Well, sire, the two ran into one another naturally enough at the corner; and then came the horrible part of the thing; for the man trampled calmly over the child’s body and left her screaming on the ground. It sounds nothing to hear, but it was hellish to see.

(Chapter one)

ABOUT THE BOOK:

First published in 1886, this is the gripping novel of a London lawyer who investigates strange occurrences surrounding his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the misanthropic Mr. Edward Hyde. The work is known for its vivid portrayal of a split personality, split in the sense that within the same person there is both an apparently good and an evil personality, each being quite distinct from the other.

I have always been curious about this book...thanks for sharing; and thanks for visiting my blog.

Laurel-Rain: I'd been meaning to read it for a while, but never realized how short it was -- under 100 pages!

I don't read classics and I really should. This sounds like a good one.

Yikes! That sounds like a nightmare of a collision! I've never read this classic, but I've always been a little curious. Cool pick, thanks for sharing it, and for stopping by My Teaser!

Oh, going Classics this week.

Re: JD Robb, I would think you'd like her. A bit heavy on the thrill for most of what you read, but certainly with a mystery element.

BTW, yours is one of the blogs that wont post if you ignore the robot button.

Unless I'm posting direct to my blogger account, which is the long way around to my blog.

Yvonne: Believe it or not, this is included in a mystery anthology I have, though I'd say it's more suspense-like than a mystery.

Thanks, Kerry -- and yes, it was quite a collision.

Alice: Yes, I had a bit of a run on classic mysteries last week, finishing three novellas back-to-back. How odd that you have to click the "robot" box on my blog, when I can skip over it here and on every other Blogger site to which I post. Weird... They definitely have a bug in there somewhere.
