Teaser Tuesday 265: Shop Till You Drop

Teaser Tuesday: Shop Till You Drop

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jenn of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week’s teaser comes from a book by the June "Featured Cozy Author," Shop Till You Drop by Elaine Viets. I confess, I have avoided this series and another by the same author because they are shopping-based mysteries. I hate shopping. I am not a clothes horse, nor can I tell one designer from another at a glance. As long as it fits, is of decent quality and is comfortable, I’m good.

On Wednesday, Helen met a woman who could not frown.

The frownless female was another amazing customer at Juliana’s. The store was on Las Olas Boulevard, the fashionable, palm-fringed shopping area in downtown Fort Lauderdale. After working two weeks there, Helen thought she’d seen every kind of expensive kept woman.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Series: A Dead-End Job Mystery #1

Once on the fast track to success, Helen Hawthorne is going nowhere fast. Forced to trade he chic life for a shabby one, she’s now on the run, jumping from city to city and dead-end job to dead-end job, trying to stay one step ahead of her past . . .

After two weeks as a new salesclerk at Juliana’s, Fort Lauderdale’s ultraexclusive clothing boutique, Helen still feels out of fashion. But in a shop where the customers’ collagen lips are bigger than their hips, who wouldn’t? And since the only crime likely to be committed around here is being old — or worse, looking old — Helen figures she’s safe. Until she discovers the manager has been embezzling money and selling designer drugs along with the designer clothes. Add murder to the mix and Helen is in deep trouble. To protect her secrets, she will have to solve the case herself — before her dead-end job turns deadly . . .

So what did you think? Worth it in spite of the shopping thing?

It was okay. Some of the characters, including the main character, were pretty annoying so while I wouldn't go out of my way to find more in the series, I might read another were I to stumble across it. Others who love the series assure me the rest of the books in the series aren't all like this one.
