Thursday Thirteen 377: Recently Read

Yes, it’s time once again for a “Recently Read.” Here’s a look at the books finished during the last few weeks. As always, click on any cover or link for more information about a particular book or author.

ABOUT THE BOOKS:

ROW 1: All three of these books were read for different challenges. The Blessing Way for the Ultimate challenge (a book published the year I was born), Curses! for the World Trip challenge (Mexico), and Icy Clutches for the SPRING challenge (the letter I).

ROW 2: More challenge books. The first was by the May featured author in the Cozy Mysteries Group, Cricket McCrae/Bailey Cates, and also fit a "Mini" challenge (stars on the cover). The latter two were also both for "Mini" challenges (a book with flowers, and a book featuring sewing/crafts). Plus, this row and the Elkins books catch me up on a couple authors (though I still have more by Elkins and Lee in Mount TBR).

ROW 3: Elaine Viets is the June featured author in the Cozy Mysteries group, and this is book one in one of her two mystery series. Did not care for this one much, so doubt I will continue the series. The other two books caught me up on a couple of favorite authors, Lisa Scottoline and Kay Hooper. I received Betrayed through a Goodreads giveaway, which made it even more imperative to catch up on this author’s books. I still have three or four Scottolines in Mount TBR, but I at least I’ve caught up on the Rosato series.

ROW 4: The YA/children's selections. All of these fit different challenges. The Gnomobile is a classic children’s book by Upton Sinclair, written for his granddaughter. I remember seeing the movie based loosely on this one when I was a kid, but never knew there was a book until I stumbled across it at a library used book sale. It was a fun read finished in a day and fitting the “SPRING” challenge (the letter G). Black Beauty and The Blood of Olympus both fulfilled criteria for the "Ultimate" challenge (a book from my childhood and a book over 500 pages). TBofO also fit the "World Trip" challenge, since half the book was set in Greece (there were also stops in Italy, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the USA) — plus, I needed to read this one so I can return it to my sister. So sad to see this series end!

ROW 5: Another "World Trip" book — this one taking us to Italy for part of the action— and I really wanted to catch up with this series. Now to find the sixth and final book!

YOUR TURN: What are you reading this week/month? Any here catch your eye?

I have Black Beauty on my kindle to read, I think it was a free download. I am doing well these days to get through a single book, so I am impressed.

Maybe I should read shorter books.

How many of these did you read for reading challenges?

Lots of intriguing titles here. I'm about to go to the beach and have three possible books to bring but maybe being with the little grandsons, I won't have the chance to read.

Anita: Shorter books do tend to go faster, although I did read the 500-pager on this list in only three days. There were a couple late nights, LOL.

Alice: LOL -- Technically all of them were for reading challenges, since I *am* participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge (goal of 100 again this year).

Colleen: Here's hoping you get some time to read at the beach! Have fun!

I love challenges and book clubs! There isn't enough time to read all the wonderful books out there!

Thanks. These selections are right in time for a summer reading challenge. :) And I haven't read any of them.

I wish I can read as fast as you. I am such a slow reader.

Interesting selection, I haven't read any of those books

Forgetfulone: Definitely not enough time! :-\

Mia: Cool! Glad to offer a few suggestions! :-)

Novroz: Thank you -- and hear I've been wishing *I* was a faster reader, LOL. ☺

Isn't 100 too easy of a goal for you

Alice: Not really. Last year I *just* made my goal, and I've only been a few over in previous years. I average about two books a week, depending on length, author writing style, and life intrusions. I can read a 500-page book by Rick Riordan in three days, but then it might take twice that for another author. I've been so tired the past couple weeks that it's taken me longer than usual to finish a 200-page book. I really don't like my neighbors.
