Wordless Wednesday 181: Lady's Slippers

The small white lady's slipper is a member of the orchid family, and a Wisconsin threatened species. With lady's slippers, it's a blink-and-you've-missed-them situation. I was lucky to catch them as they started to bloom May 22, 2015. A week later they were already dying off.

So that's why they call them Lady's Slippers. Kind of makes me think of Minnie Mouse.

Alice: I take you you've never seen them before? And you're right -- they do look a bit like Minnie's footwear.

Great find! I've so rarely seen them in the wild, but when it happens, it's a real treat!

Thanks, Beth! I missed them last year, so was happy to see them twice this spring. ☺

Thanks, Jana! I only wish they didn't have such a short bloom time. Two weeks and they're done! :-(
