Teaser Tuesday 285: Jane Eyre

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jenn of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week’s teaser is from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, which I was inspired to pick up for a third time after reading The Eyre Affair. These lines are from about halfway through the novel, which I enjoyed as much as my first two readings.

The night—its silence—its rest, was rent in twain by a savage, a sharp, a shrilly sound that ran from end to end of Thornfield Hall.

My pulse stopped: my heart stood still; my stretched arm was paralysed. The cry died, and was not renewed.

(Chapter 20)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Originally published in 1847.

Orphaned into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead, subject to the cruel regime at Lowood charity school, Jane Eyre nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. She takes up the post of governess at Thornfield, falls in love with Mr. Rochester, and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage in a story that transcends melodrama to portray a woman's passionate search for a wider and richer life than Victorian society traditionally allowed.

With a heroine full of yearning, the dangerous secrets she encounters, and the choices she finally makes, Charlotte Bronte's innovative and enduring romantic novel continues to engage and provoke readers.

I love this book!

Beth: Me too. This was a third reading of it, and I enjoyed it as much as the first. I'm currently reading another by CB, Villette, but finding it slower going -- mostly due to a new part-time job eating into my reading time.

Oh, yes, a favorite from long ago! Definitely worth a reread or two. Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “AFTER I DO”

While I seldom read classics, I have actually read this one. I enjoyed it. This week my teaser comes from Dark Turns by Cate Holahan. Happy reading!

That's a good book, but I have no desire to re-read it. There are precious few books in the world that I re-read.

I will be rereading this one forever. Oh, how I love it. I read it again earlier this year because my husband wanted to read it for the first time. I'm relieved he liked it. It's one of my all-time favorite books.

That's enough to really spoke you reading late in a quiet house. Love that book! Here's my teaser: http://wp.me/p4DMf0-115

Kathy M: It was definitely worth rereading again. I don't reread a lot of books, especially classics, but I do love this one.

Alice: I wasn't planning to reread this one, but it had been so long, and I had just finished The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, that I could not help reaching for it again. I wish I were breezing through Villette as fast as I did JE.

Lit Feline: I'm glad your husband loved this book as much as we do. :)

Mrs. M: Indeed! While I was reading this alone at night, at least it wasn't a "dark and stormy" one.
