Teaser Tuesday 327: Secondhand Spirits

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jenn of Books and a Beat. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week's teaser comes from Secondhand Spirits by Juliet Blackwell, who was the July Cozy Author of the Month. I guess you could say it was an okay start to the series, other than the author mistakenly claiming there were mountains in Wisconsin. NOT! She also tends to abuse that trite two-word phrase I abhor: just then. I can only hope the series gets better. Here are a couple samplings from the book:

"Pleased ta meetcha."

I whirled around to find a misshapen creature perched, gargoylelike, atop an antique walnut jewelry display case. He was small and bent, with a muscular body and scaly skin, a large head, a snoutlike nose and mouth, and outsize ears like a bat's. His fingers were long and humanlike, surprisingly graceful, but his enormous feet had three toes and long talons. His voice was deep and gravelly.

(Chapter one)

~*~*~*~*~

He gave a little shudder. "She scares me. I hear she has empty sockets where there should be eyes, and her mouth is an open, voracious void, and — "

"Enough, thanks. I don't need a description."

(Chapter 4)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Series: Witchcraft mystery #1

Lily Ivory is not your average witch. Her spell-casting powers tend to draw mischievous spirits while keeping normal humans at a distance. But now her vintage clothing store could give her a chance to make friends in San Francisco....

Lily hopes for a normal life when she opens Aunt Cora's Closet. With her magical knack for vintage fashion
—she can sense vibrations of the past from clothing and jewelry—her store becomes a big hit.

But when a client is murdered and children start disappearing from the Bay Area, Lily may be the only one who can unravel the crime. She tries to keep her identity a secret while investigating, but it's not easy—especially under the spells of sexy "mythbuster" Max Carmichael and powerful witch Aidan Rhodes. Will Lily's witchy ways be forced out of the closet?

I wouldn't exactly call them mountains, but if you head toward La Croix there are some entertaining hills.

Alice: Exactly -- lots of great hills, impressive ones even, but no mountains.

Oh wow. A paranormal cozy series. And it sounds like there may be a gargoyle. I will definitely be checking these out!
