Thursday Thirteen 443: A Bookish Theme

I'm borrowing this week's topic from a Sunday Stealing of a few weeks ago . . .

01. How long did it take you to finish your last book? Five days.

02. How many times do you stare at your bookshelves each day? As there are shelves in almost every room, I see them every day.

03. Do you ever quote books in public? It has been known to happen.

04. How old were you when you got your first library card? I was in second grade, and we lived across the street from the library.

05. Do you ever re-read books? Occasionally. I am more likely to re-read a classic or book from my childhood not read in years than something more recent.

06. Do you judge a book by its cover? It has been known to happen. Let's face it, some covers are not just bad, but downright CREEPY. If I have a choice between covers, I will chose one that is a) more aesthetically pleasing and b) in better condition.

07. What are your biggest distractions from reading? Work, Crafts, TV.

08. Where is your favorite place to buy books? Most of my books come from Half Price Books or the library's monthly used book sale. I also buy a lot of books for my Nook (B&N).

09. Do you always have a book with you? Of course!

10. Do you read during breakfast? In bed? I do sometimes read during meals, and almost always read for at least a half hour in bed at night. If I have trouble sleeping, I will try reading for a while.

12. How many hours a day would you say you read?
At least an hour every day, some days much more than that, depending on if I have an entire day off and no plans.

13. Do you read more or less now than you did, say, 10 years ago? Do you consider yourself a speed reader? In 2010-2015 I averaged 8.3 books a month, for a total of 100 per year. Last year's total read was down to 84, or 7 books a month, owing to changes in my work schedule. Obviously, I get more read in some months than others, depending on length and authors' writing styles. Some would say this qualifies me as a fast reader, but I know people who read 200-300 a year. Of course, I often wonder how much of what they read is actually retained.

My reading numbers last year dropped by half, which was unfortunate. I will have to do better but am already behind for 2017! I used to read one a week and thought that was good. Hard to work and keep a husband and a house and find time to read.

Anita: Life does have a habit of intruding on our reading time, doesn't it? :-\

Seeing your bookshelves and staring at them are NOT the same thing.

I enjoy murder mysteries, historical fiction, and biographies. And of course, if I don't have one of those to read, I will read almost anything. But no horror or vampires.
Currently I am reading an unauthorized biography of Jimmie Buffet. Since the singer refused to speak to the author, Steve Eng, the book consists of interviews Buffet gave to other people. As soon as I find something else to read, I will probably return the book to the library without finishing it.
I am drawn to book covers that have animals on the front, especially cats!
Hope you are having a great week!

Great post! Can I steal it from you? I love reading, too. Hey are you on Goodreads? I'd love to be friends with you there.

Have you ever read a book from the middle to the end and then go to the beginning? I know it's weird but I've done that more than once.

Seems we've had our reading challenges this past year. Here's to a year of flamboyant book reading. I stopped reading "Daredevils" because the main people started diving off the Niagara Falls, and dying. Gah! 😜
