Thursday Thirteen 107: Recently Viewed Movies

For lack of a more stellar topic this week, here are the last thirteen movies watched, mostly on TCM, ABCFamily or Lifetime. An (*) denotes a first viewing.

Camille (1936) *
Penny Serenade (1941) *
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)
Secrets of the Summer House (2008) *
The Sound of Music (1965--a perennial classic)
Mary Poppins (1964 - so fun to watch with my 4-yr old niece!)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008--excellent film, but wish I'd seen it first on the big screen!) *
The Departed (2006) *
High Noon (2009, based on the Nora Roberts novel) *
My Fake Fiance (2009) *
The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009) *
Eight Below (2006) *
Bridge to Terabithia (2007--I did NOT expect to be all teary at the end) *

Bonus (Seen over the weekend, after I had this written up):
Stripes (1981...and I probably had not seen it since mid-80's)
I Remember Mama (1948...a classic favorite)

How 'bout you--seen anything good lately?

And here I thought I was doing a lot of moving watching because I went to the theater twice in one month. I watched Wolverine and Star Trek. :)

Bridge to Terabithia is much better in book form than on film, in my opinion. The film focuses too much on the magical aspects of Terabithia, whereas the focus of the book is on friendship. By the way, did you know that this book has been challenged so often by parents that it's on the ALA's 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books list?

Some great titles in there! :)

Another book worth reading: "Q&A" (or it may be retitled "Slumdog Millionare"), by Vikas Swarup. It's a little different from the movie, but still a fantastically engaging read.

And Stripes! :) Hee! One of my all-time favorite films!

Happy TT!
Ciao!

I loved The Departed but I hated the way it ended. LOL And would you believe I've never seen An Officer And A Gentleman? :) Happy Thursday! *Hugs*

Slumdog blew me away!

We saw Wolverine last weekend, it was okay. Entertaining, but predictable.

This weekend - STAR TREK. Next weekend - TERMINATOR.

I can't even name 13 movies that I've seen in the past year.
Good list.

I read the book Bridges to Terabithia and I loved it. I haven't seen the movie, but you inspire me to check it out.

Wow, I'm a movie fiend, and haven't seen several on your list.

I avoided Bridge to Terabithia 'cause I'd heard that about the end. I'm so not in the mood for the tear-jerker.

Great list!

I just saw Star Trek. It rawked. Also saw Wolverine - which was really good.

It's the most I've been to the movies in about a year. lol.

I wish the same for Slumdog Millionaire too. I regretted not seeing it in the big screen first.

I want to see Slumdog Millionaire. That seems interesting. The only movie I watched this past week was "Bolt" which was actually a cute movie.

Happy TT

Alice - If you went to an actual theater twice in one month, you definitely have me beat--I haven't been to the cinema since March. Some weekends you can't help but love cable and DVDs!

Carleen - I could have sworn I read this book when younger, but nothing about the movie was familiar. I really should have gotten my hands on a copy before seeing it. I am also not surprised that Terabithia is one of the most-challenged books.

Ms Menozzi - I had not seen Stripes in ages, so when I saw it was on this past weekend... I remembered some parts of it, but had completely forgotten the line about Wisconsin: "We zip in, we pick them up, and we zip right out again. We're not going to Moscow. It's Czechoslovakia, it's like going into Wisconsin." Hehe...

Hootin' Anni - I really liked Slumdog, but it really is best to see it on the largest screen possible. There are a lot of subtitles in the first half that can be hard to read on a regular sized TV. Don't let the subtitles put you off--it's definitely worth renting!

Adelle - Both were good movies, I hope you get the chance to see them.

Stephanie - So glad I'm not the only one disappointed by the ending of The Departed. And how is it you have neer seen An Officer And A Gentleman?! Classic romance!

Carmen - Those are three on my list of movies I don't want to see, LOL. Not my prefered genres, but I do hope you enjoy them!

Harriet - Well...to be honest, I cheat a little. I record books and movies in my journal. Comes in handy for weeks like this. ;)

Brenda - The movie was pretty good, but as I said above, I wish I had read (reread?) the book before seeing the movie. Then again, NOT reading the book first is one way to avoid being disappointed in the movie. *g*

I used to read Bridge to Terabithia aloud to my 5th graders each year, but I've never seen the film. I can't remember the last movie I saw (it's been years actually) but I'm thinking of seeing the new Star Trek film with friends who say I'll love it.
Hugs and blessings,

Ella - Don't let the ending of Terabithia deter you from seeing it; it really is good. Just have a couple of Kleenex handy! ;)

Elise - I rarely get to the cinema anymore, usually only once or twice a year myself. Movies don't seem to play as long as they used to, and come out on DVD so soon now anyway.

Sandier - Ah, another vote for the big screen. It would have made the subtitled passages a bit easier, wouldn't it?

Sue - I haven't seen Bolt yet, but hear it was cute.

Paige - What? That's the only movie on the list you've ever seen? Tsk tsk tsk... You'll have to remedy that! ;)

Storyteller - Terabithia seems like a good book to read aloud to a class, especially with it's messages of friendship and bullying.

Daisy said...

Great post - I don't think I've seen most of those. The last movie I watched was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I couldn't watch the ant scene. Happy Thursday!
