Thursday Thirteen 131: Eplegaarden

As mentioned last week here and here, my sister, niece (aka The Bug) and I made our third annual trek to Eplegaarden, an apple orchard and pumpkin patch close to me, on 17 October. It was a little windy, overcast and a bit chilly, but we still had a good time. This was one of the best years for pumpkins and apples. Pumpkins are large with a deep orange color, and the apple trees so heavy with fruit their limbs scrape the ground, making it easy for little ones to help in the plucking. Here are thirteen pictures from our day (and you'll note I cleverly slipped in a fourteenth in the header above).

It was a really good year for pumpkins, apples...

and squash. They had wagons full of gourds in assorted shapes, colors and sizes.

The annual measuring

Eagerly traipsing up the hill to the orchard (sure, she volunteered to pull it when it was empty!).

Look how plentiful this red delicious tree is--and this is a small tree!

Concentrating on those golden delicious...

This looks like a good one!

Look how the boughs of this golden delicious tree droop to the ground!

Shh...don't tell my sister I snuck this one in! And yes, she is indeed eating one apple while plucking another (tasting is allowed, within reason).

One more Gala, I think...

There were still plenty of grapes clinging to the vines, too!

Huh. here it was a good year for apples and grapes, but the pumpkins didn't do so well. the rain was at just the wrong times for the pumpkins. and the peach crop this year was wretched.

Glad you had fun!

Adelle - Precious indeed! And I'd gladly share the bounty if you lived closer. ;)

Elise - Apparently apples, grapes, corn and pumpkins all did well here this year. Tomatoes and potatoes on the other hand...blighted.

That looks like a place I'd LOVE to visit. :) Great pictures! Happy Thursday!

Stephanie - You'd love it! I'm not sure of the acreage, but that place is huge! There are pumpkin patches and fields you can't even see until you get in there.

Tracie - Small world...I just came from visiting you! Thanks for stopping by!

Ella - Glad you enjoyed our excursion along with us! And yes--you should get out there and pick some apples. The season is about over.

Great photos. Those red apples look yummy.

I'd never picked apples before, or grapes, or in fact, any fruit at all, from the trees. But I'd sure love to do it one day! =) Love the pictures!

Looks like you had a lot of fun! I loved the shots of the grapes - Yummy! One of my favorite sights in late September/early October here is during the grape harvest. The tractors hauling huge loads of grapes on the country roads just screams "Autumn" to me. :)

Happy TT!
Ciao for now!

I used to go to the apple orchard all the time with my dad when I was a kid. This brings back some wonderful memories.

Sarah - Thanks, and thank you for visiting!

Bacolad - Nothing says fall quite like apples. Thanks for checking out my photos!

Alice - ROFL... Sorry, I didn't get pics of their quidditch field. Basically, there are three hoops suspended at one end of the "field." They had toy brooms for the kids to straddle, and then while "riding" their brooms they tried to kick a soccer ball through the hoops. Did you know the UW actually has a quidditch team? Seriously. There was an article last spring.

Shelley - The red delicious are...delicious! *G*

Betty - Wow, not even picked wild berries? You don't know what you're missing - though apple plucking is definitely easier on the back than strawberry picking. ;)

Ms M - Oh, I bet all those truckloads of grapes are a sight to see. You'll have to share pics with us sometime!

Barbara - Glad to remind you of some happy memories. Thanks for joining in our excursion!

Harriet - Great, indeed -- thank you! :)

Nice gourds! And those are some late season grapes. How'd they do that?

Heather said...

Paige - You paint your pumpkins? Different!

Mariposa - Thank you!

Yvette - I think the fact the grapes were still clinging to the vine so late in the season is owed our cold weather. Eating anything freshly picked at the orchard was like taking them right out of your refrigerator.

A couple weeks ago, my friend and I went to an orchard, we picked apples and grapes, it was a lot of fun! I use to love going to the pumpkin patch when I was little, and still loved it when I was a teenager! I did a TT list too, it's here: http://lifes-adventures.net
Cheers!

Hi Noelle! We never visited pumpkin patches when we were kids, but it sure is fun going with my niece! Glad you and your friend had fun on your orchard trip!

I can't believe how big the Bug is getting. Seems like just yesterday she was born. Time is going by way too fast.

Tell me about it! I can't believe she'll be five in two months.
