What is that? I mean besides being a bird. Wait, that isn't a street light so... a starling? At first I thought a penguin. Yeah, I know. Totally unreasonable, but that was still my first thought.

Definitely not a starling. Those are skinnier, all one dark shade, and have a narrower and longer beak that kind of curves down. I believe this is a chickadee, perched atop a shepherd's hook that holds two bird feeders.

I wondered what the bird was perched on - glad I read your response to Alice. Ha ha Alice, I always think of penguins first too since they are the coolest birds on earth.

Kaye: I'd be more than a little concerned were I ever to see a penguin outside either my residence or place of employment. Wild turkeys and pheasants are one thing, but penguins? I don't think so! lol

Okay, so I thought this looked like a type of chickadee--same body shape, but chickadees generally have a band of white around the eyes. So, I went on a web search and it looks like this is actually a junco, which is a member of the sparrow family. They breed in Canada and winter in the northern US.

LOL, Kaye. Yes, it's only natural to think it would be the coolest bird on earth in Heather's photos. All those zoo photos, you know. :)

Doesn't junco sound like it should be a name for a Mexican bird? Canadian, huh? I hadn't thought about little birds coming from Canada. Just the big ones.

LOL -- It does sound more hispanic than Canadian, eh?
