Elizabeth Peters is the January featured author in the Cozy Mystery group at GoodReads. Since I had two of her books in Mount TBR, I decided to start off this year's reading with Ms. Peters.
Laurie finished the book. It told her little she did not know, except to reinforce her conviction that half the world was nuts. Not crazy, not stupid—just nuts. Ready to believe anything they wanted to believe and ignore all contradictory evidence.

I was thunderstruck. But not by fear—no, never suppose for a moment that I was afraid! I was simply paralyzed by surprise. The figure stood utterly motionless. I could not even detect the rise and fall of its breast. It lifted an arm, then, in a gesture of unmistakable menace.

ABOUT THE BOOKS
The Love Talker — Don't let the title deter you, this was a good stand-alone mystery!
Laurie has finally returned to Idlewood, the beloved family home deep in the Maryland woods where she found comfort and peace as a lonely young girl. But things are very different now. There is no peace in Idlewood. The haunting sound of a distant piping breaks the stillness of a snowy winter's evening. Seemingly random events have begun to take on a sinister shape. And dotty old Great Aunt Lizzie is convinced that there are fairies about—and she has photographs to prove it. For Laurie, one fact is becoming disturbingly clear: there is definitely something out there in the woods—something fiendishly, cunningly, malevolently human—and the lives of her aging loved ones, as well as Laurie's own, are suddenly at serious risk.

Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody #1)
Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her debut Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way to Cairo, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been abandoned by her scoundrel lover. Together the two women sail up the Nile to an archaeological site run by the Emerson brothers—the irascible but dashing Radcliffe and the amiable Walter. Soon their little party is increased by one—one mummy, that is, and a singularly lively example of the species. Strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn. Now Amelia finds herself up against an unknown enemy—and perilous forces that threaten to make her first Egyptian trip also her last . . .

Beth: Thank you, I enjoyed the first book and am already halfway through the second.
Thanks, Tania. I'm glad you liked both teasers. :)
Kara: There is a great deal of truth in that one, isn't there? Take, for instance, all the hype about the world coming to an end on December 21. Yeah, that happened. LOL
Laurel-Rain: Thank you, both had me wanting to read when I should have been doing other things. Like working. I confess, I snuck a few pages of "Crocodile" in at work. *G*
Kelley: Yes, I say I have started the year off with a couple of really good books this year.
Trib Book Mama: Thank you, I have been enjoying my introduction to Elizabeth Peters. I have already added the next couple of Amelia Peabody books to my list.
Thanks, Heather. I've not yet read any of Elizabeth Peters work, but these teasers make me want to check it out.

Really love that first teaser. So true.
Here is my TT post.

Thanks, Nyx! I'm glad people like that one as much as I do. :D
I thought I had read everything by Elizabeth Peters but The Love Talker doesn't seem at all familiar. I will have to try to track down a copy (since I really must read *everything* an author has written). Happy reading!
I liked both teasers. I've been meaning to read Elizabeth Peters for ages. I'm reading a Victorian mystery at present written by Tasha Alexander. I think you'd enjoy her too.
Kathy M: LOL...you know she also writes as Barbara Michaels...right? *grin*
Shelley: Some ladies in the Cozy Mystery group recommended Tasha Alexander to me a few months ago. I wrote her name/titles down, but keep forgetting to look for them. :-|
I've been wanting to read an Elizabeth Peters book and haven't yet. This looks really good.
Hi Yvonne! I hope you will giver Peters a try. I enjoyed both of these, and will definitely seek out more of her books.
