Teaser Tuesday 163: Who Do, Voodoo?

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

Have just finished the debut mystery novel by Rochelle Staab, Who Do, Voodoo? This was a good, fast mystery. While some may be turned off by the voodoo aspect, I found that facet of it interesting, and liked that there was a bit of humor and romance as well. Here are a couple teasers.

We stopped short under her porch light, staring. A tarot card was tacked to her front door.

I looked down at the black, rust, and beige Aztec rug covering the dark wood floor. "Did you get this rug in South America, too?"

"Different trip, but yes. I bought it from a rug dealer when I was researching Mesoamerican human sacrifice rituals of the Incan Empire."

Oh, yeah, I shop that way, too.

A succession of loud caws from the hill below drew me closer. My heart began to pound.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Who Do, Voodoo? is the Anthony, Agatha, Eureka! and Golden Heart nominated first novel in her bestselling "Mind for Murder" mystery series for Berkley Prime Crime. This new series features no-nonsense Liz Cooper, a psychologist forced to embrace the occult to clear her best friend of murder.

When Liz Cooper's friend Robin Bloom finds an unusual tarot card tacked to her front door, Liz writes it off as a prank. Robin refuses to ignore the omen—her late husband drew the same card, the Three of Swords, in a reading the night before he was killed in a car accident. As more cards and darker threats appear, Liz realizes someone very dangerous is upping the ante...

Liz turns to her brother's ex college roommate, occult expert Nick Garfield. As Nick leads her into the voodoo community to locate the origin of the deck, she can't ignore their attraction to each other. Then, a woman is found murdered and Robin becomes the prime suspect. Determined to clear her friend, Liz teams with Nick to unravel otherworldly secrets and seek help from beyondor risk being outwitted by a cunning killer...

Thanks, Kathy. I couldn't help chuckling over that second teaser last night, and knew I had to include it today.

Nice teases!! Read this one sometime back! Was the first and so far only book I've won on Goodreads!

Thanks for visiting my teaser!

Jessica: Lucky you to have won it--I think this was one I entered to win, but have had no luck at GR in two years now. Am definitely interested in reading book two!

You could tell things were going to go downhill. The tarot card is a good clue :)

Shelley: Yes, a tarot card tacked to the door would certainly make me pay attention.

Heather said...

Laurel-Rain: Captivating is one way to describe it. I read half the book in one night!

Heather said...

Yvonne: It was good, wasn't it? *G*

Heather said...

Haven't heard of this one before. Voodoo and Tarot cards together is an odd mix, isn't it? Definitely sounds intriguing.

Oooh sounds creepy! Thanks for sharing!

Here is our TT of the week. Come on by Harlie's Books and visit! See ya next week. ;)

Heather said...

Nash: Thank you, it was good!

Heather said...

Joy: Yes, voodoo and tarot cards do not usually go together--which added to the mystery of who could have combined the two and why.

Heather said...

Alice: There were definitely some interesting aspects to this one--such as delving into the vodoun world.

Heather said...

Beth Starr: Hehe...I had a feeling people would especially like that second teaser. *VBG*

Heather said...

Beth F: If you like cozies with a "paranormal" bent, you'll definitely want to give this one a try! : )

Heather said...

Liberty Ann: Though there were some moments of suspense, it wasn't the least bit creepy. One thing you can count on in a cozy is that the murder will take place off-page.

Alice Audrey said...

That and the non sequitur, flip attitude.

Heather said...

Alice: I loved Liz's sometimes sarcastic attitude. It added just the right amount of levity to a murder mystery.
