This week I am teasing from books one and two of The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry. These were good, fast reads—I read both over two days—and well-deserving of the numerous awards they have received.
"Jonas has not been assigned," she informed the crowd, and his heart sank. Then she went on. "Jonas has been selected."(The Giver, chapter 8)~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
"Actually," the chief guardian said in a calm voice, "you have no rights at all. But I am going to tell you the decision so that there will be no misunderstanding."(Gathering Blue, chapter 5)
ABOUT THE BOOKS:
Part of The Giver Quartet (YA)
THE GIVER (Book one)
Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.
When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.
GATHERING BLUE (Book two)
Kira, an orphan with a twisted leg, lives in a world where the weak are cast aside. She fears for her future until she is spared by the all-powerful Council of Guardians. Kira is a gifted weaver and is given a task that no other community member can do. While her talent keeps her alive and brings certain privileges, Kira soon realizes she is surrounded by many mysteries and secrets. No one must know of her plans to uncover the truth about her world—and to find out what exists beyond it.

Both very different books... good teasers... you've got me curious.
I haven't read The Giver, if you can believe it, but it is one of my must reads. Thanks for the teasers!
Here's my TT post.
Tressa @ Tressa's Wishful Endings
Tania: The societies in which the main characters of each book lives is quite different--one is completely controlled, the other absolute chaos. It has me wondering what to expect fo book three!
Tressa: I picked these two up at the library's monthly used book sale last summer, after spying a familar name from my youth scrawled across the covers. I had not read these two, so naturally they had to come home with me. Now I am anxious to find the rest of the series. *g*
I had not heard of these books. Thanks for sharing the teasers!
My teaser is here: http://mrscaptkirk51.blogspot.com/2013/03/teaser-tuesday-blood-and-bullets.html
I haven't heard of either of these. Great teasers though. They enticed me.
The books sound great. I like the title and cover of "Gathering Blue." Great teasers!

Two interesting teasers.

Interesting that these are both alternative realities with a gritty, control-oriented focus, and neither are the usual mystery.
I'm embarrassed to admit I've never read The Giver. I need to remedy that!
Here's my TEASER TUESDAYS post.
Allison: Glad to introduce you to some new books!
Shelley: Glad they enticed you! *G*
Majanka: They were both good, and I like the title "Gathering Blue" as well.
Karen & Gerard: Oh, yay! I'm glad the teasers leave people wanting to know more. *G*
Diary: Thank you, I'm glad they intrigue you.
Carolyn: I'm happy to have introduced these to you. Thanks for visiting!
Laurel-Rain: Hehehe...I guess my work here as an enabler is done. *VBG*
Tribute: Thank you. *g*
Alice: Yes, they are similar in that aspect. Though existing in the same world, one community has advanced technologically, while the other has devolved. I'm intrigued to see what happens.
Melissa: Yes, you really must remedy that! *G*
Both sound really good.
