Teaser Tuesday 167: The Giver and Gathering Blue

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current book or recent read.
* Share a few "teaser" sentences from somewhere in the book.
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser!

This week I am teasing from books one and two of The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry. These were good, fast reads—I read both over two days—and well-deserving of the numerous awards they have received.

Reassuringly she placed her arm across his tense shoulders.

"Jonas has not been assigned," she informed the crowd, and his heart sank.

Then she went on. "Jonas has been selected."

(The Giver, chapter 8)

"I have a right to know your decision!" She wrested her arms free of the guards’ grasp and faced the Council of Guardians.

"Actually," the chief guardian said in a calm voice, "you have no rights at all. But I am going to tell you the decision so that there will be no misunderstanding."

(Gathering Blue, chapter 5)

ABOUT THE BOOKS:
Part of The Giver Quartet (YA)

THE GIVER (Book one)
Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.

When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

GATHERING BLUE (Book two)
Kira, an orphan with a twisted leg, lives in a world where the weak are cast aside. She fears for her future until she is spared by the all-powerful Council of Guardians. Kira is a gifted weaver and is given a task that no other community member can do. While her talent keeps her alive and brings certain privileges, Kira soon realizes she is surrounded by many mysteries and secrets. No one must know of her plans to uncover the truth about her world—and to find out what exists beyond it.

Tania: The societies in which the main characters of each book lives is quite different--one is completely controlled, the other absolute chaos. It has me wondering what to expect fo book three!

Tressa: I picked these two up at the library's monthly used book sale last summer, after spying a familar name from my youth scrawled across the covers. I had not read these two, so naturally they had to come home with me. Now I am anxious to find the rest of the series. *g*

Interesting that these are both alternative realities with a gritty, control-oriented focus, and neither are the usual mystery.

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never read The Giver. I need to remedy that!

Here's my TEASER TUESDAYS post.

Diary: Thank you, I'm glad they intrigue you.

Carolyn: I'm happy to have introduced these to you. Thanks for visiting!

Laurel-Rain: Hehehe...I guess my work here as an enabler is done. *VBG*

Tribute: Thank you. *g*

Alice: Yes, they are similar in that aspect. Though existing in the same world, one community has advanced technologically, while the other has devolved. I'm intrigued to see what happens.

Melissa: Yes, you really must remedy that! *G*
